Chapter 1: The Beginning of an End (2)
“Dragon’s Venom?” Zhou Yan’s brows furrowed, somewhat confused.
Zhou Qing stepped forward, leaned over, and caressed Zhou Yuan’s head, each caress hinting with a touch of sorrow and despair. “That’s right… it’s time you should know. Yuan’er, you are my Zhou Family’s Sacred Dragon!”
Zhou Yan could not help but smile bitterly. The Sacred Dragon? How laughable. Even the Eighth Spiritual Meridians cannot be found in his body.
Zhou Qing sat next to Zhou Yan, his voice low and husky. “Yuan’er, you must know that we are a big dynasty, our sovereignty stretching far and beyond, but on this vast endless continent, we can only be regarded as a small country, an ant amongst elephants. But there is something that you should know. Fifteen years ago, the Zhou Family’s reign spread over the vast expanse, our name known by many. We were like a great big mountain overlooking the masses.”
Zhou Yan’s mouth gaped, shock and surprise colorfully written on his face. On this vast continent, there are many countries, many dynasties, monarchs even. Compared to his dynasty, his family, the Zhou Family, they can only be considered weak. But how come he’s never heard of this before?
“Do you know about the Great Wu Dynasty?” As Zhou Qing uttered the name, his eyes flashed, an endless sea of memories came rolling in, memories he can’t seem to forget it.
“Great Wu Dynasty? Nn.” Zhou Yan nodded. The Great Wu Dynasty was a dynasty at the furthermost top level amongst all dynasties in the vast continent, their country, and nation prosperous as ever where countless crouching tigers and hidden dragons run amok. The Zhou Dynasty can only be described as a dwarf compared to the Great Wu Dynasty, the giant.
Zhou Qing’s eyes reddened at this time, a deep-seated hatred twinkle in his eyes slowly emerged. “Yuan’er, did you know that fifteen years ago, The Wu Family was once our Zhou Family’s subjects?”
Zhou Yuan’s eyes widened. “The Great Wu Family was once our subjects? Were we that powerful fifteen years ago? Then… what happened to us? Why are we currently in this state?” Zhou Yuan prodded, curiosity getting the best of him.
“Hundreds of years ago, long before our dynasty was founded, the Wu Family, had been following us, remaining as loyal as ever, making great contributions to our Zhou Family. They’ve enjoyed many things we’ve provided them as they continue to serve under us whilst rising in power and glory.”
Zhou Qing’s body shivered slightly, his eyes bloodshot at this time, all the more ready to pop out.
“However, no one had ever thought that they’d betray us. It was fifteen years ago when the Wu Family suddenly launched a rebellion of betrayal. Our Zhou Family had only discovered that after years of ignoring their rise, we didn’t realize that they had hidden martial experts in their wake and at the same time, entranced many of surrounding dynasties to rally for them, to support their cause.
“In less than a year, we were pushed back all the way south, fleeing to our ancestral home, the land where the first Zhou Dynasty began.
“Yuan’er I don’t know why the Wu Family betrayed us…
“But my ignorance vanished till I learned of a vital information from one of our secret agent. The cause of their betrayal, Yuan’er was due to a prophecy that had been circulating within the Wu Family for the past hundred years.”
“Prophecy?” Zhou Yan asked.
Zhou Qing gritted his teeth, speaking out the contents of the prophecy word for word. “When the serpent and phoenix swallow the dragon, the Wu Family shall prosper!”
“….When the serpent and phoenix swallow the dragon, the Wu Family shall prosper?” Zhou Yan repeated the words soft and gently, unsure of its meaning. “What does it mean?”
Zho Qing’s eyes were somber and dismal. “I did not know the meaning of the prophecy until that one day. They continued to chase after us, kept on attacking till they reached what was currently beneath our feet, the city of Zhou, but they didn’t attack. It was like they were waiting for something.”
“Father, what were they waiting for?” Zhou Yan felt a sense of uneasiness coursing within.
Zhou Qing turned his head, his eyes gazing at Zhou Yuan’s orbs. Tears fell from the corner of Zhou Qing’s eyes. Such melancholic anger and despaired caused Zhou Yuan’s heart to tremble.
“….They were waiting for your birth.”
Zhou Yuan’s heart thumped, heart palpitating wildly, caught off guard by his father’s words.
His mother, Qin Yu, lost any semblance of bearing and cried.
“Do you know what was happening when you were born?” Zhou Qing’s eyes were bloody red. “Yuan’er, the moment you were born, the heavens trembled, revealing a prophetic vision above the skies. Purple spiritual qi covered the heavens, rising higher and higher above, the aura of the Sacred Dragon transpired the heavens and earth.
“Yuan’er, you were naturally born with the Eighth Spiritual Meridians, directly reaching Yang Qi.
“This was the legendary Sacred Dragon’s Qi! Yuan’er, your future would have been endless. You’d soar the heavens and earth. The sun and moon would have bowed at the sight of you. You are our Zhou Family’s Sacred Dragon!”
Zhou Qing’s voice grew tepid, his excitement growing violently. The moment Zhou Yuan was born, he recalled how excited he was, remembered that all they suffered would not be for naught. Forget the dangerous moment they faced! It was time to celebrate the birth of the Sacred Dragon!
At the same time, Zhou Yuan’s eyes grew wider and wider. He could not imagine such thoughts. Him a Sacred Dragon? Prophetic visions filled the boundless sky? That can’t be right.
“Father… why then am I unable to find my Eighth Spiritual Meridians…?” Zhou Yuan looked at the palm of his hands, finding that it was shaking slightly. Since he was naturally born with the Eighth Spiritual Meridians, why then could he not find it?
Zhou Qing remained silent, the excitement in his eyes fading, now only a speck of dust and dullness, thoroughly exhausted from life. There was now only deep sadness.
“Because the moment you were born the Wu Emperor’s wife also gave birth to a girl and a boy outside the city of Zhou. The baby boy held the aura of a serpent whereas the baby girl held the aura of a phoenix.
“According to the information we’d gotten, the Wu Emperor’s wife was pregnant for three full years, not giving birth during those time… as if they were waiting for something.
“Legend has it that those who were born on the same year, the same month, the same day can devour one another’s fate and destiny.
“And then I realized what it was the moment you were born. Because it turned out that the Wu Family had been scheming such plans for so many years. They didn’t just want to take away our power, they also sought to take away our Zhou Family’s Sacred Dragon! The reason they remained silent for so many years was because of you.
Zhou Yuan’s mouth parted, a nipping air of chilliness traveled to the soles of his feet all the way to the top of his body. Life truly is fickle. To think there would be such a clever thing in this world and had brewed a plan for well over a hundred years without a leak of drop spilling while Zhou Dynasty left ignorant and unaware all this time.
And in order to accomplish such thing, they used all means to not let Emperor Wu’s wife give birth for three straight years, slowly but surely waiting for his birth.
“Father, that’s treacherous… a conspiracy!”
