Chapter 99 – Sales Volume (3)
Lately, Xu Yadan had been feeling ill at ease.
She was one of the many popular artists within the entertainment circle, wherever she went she would be greeted by cheers and placed on a pedestal. She had earned quite a bit of money and been a part of many projects. Indeed, she had a successful career and was always surrounded by money. It was reasonable to say that she shouldn’t be worrying about anything.
But in reality, there was a prick in her heart, harshly stabbing her and reminding her of its existence.
— Su Jin.
Three years ago, the name Su Jin had abruptly appeared within the entertainment circle. In the beginning, the newly debuted Su Jin indeed trod the wrong path. During that time, she was no different from the many young girls funneling into the entertainment circle. She was young, naive, pristine like a sheet of paper, and very beautiful. However, the most basic requirement for girls entering the entertainment circle was their beauty. If they were unable to find a way to up their status within the entertainment circle, they’d just be forgotten and viewed as any other normal person.
However, Su Jin quickly found her way. She got better and better resources, and appeared under the spotlight more often. As long as people weren’t blind, they knew that someone was backing Su Jin. When her name became more popular, Xu Yadan who had a similar style as Su Jin was in an awkward position.
But carefully looking back, Xu Yadan was actually two years younger than Su Jin. However, she was signed to a company and had debuted when she was eighteen and admitted to a filming school. Therefore, based on debuting experiences, Xu Yadan was the “senior” without a doubt. However, even after many years in the entertainment circle, Su Jin still surpassed her!
Xu Yadan was unwilling to accept this and her manager company was even more unwilling.
Therefore, they incessantly demeaned Su Jin through their posts. Also, Xu Yadan had to lower her status to steal spokesperson contracts, roles in dramas, and spots on reality shows. She was firm on competing against Su Jin, but the competitions in the past were just empty words, and she didn’t really do anything. This time, Xu Yadan stole Su Jin’s modeling style, and finally called it a victory.
Who knew that the well-mannered Su Jin refused to keep in this grievance to herself and took off with the entire modeling time!
“Did she really need to?” Xu Yadan said disdainfully, “I just stole her modeling clothes, and the other modeling clothes are good-looking as well. Look at her, acting as if she was wronged. Who knows if she’ll run to her sugar daddy and complain.”
Even the editor of 《Gentleman Style》thought Su Jin was making a fuss out of nothing. Up until this point, they didn’t realize their mistake.
However, in just a few days, news spread in the fashion circle. Su Jin’s manager was going around and getting resources for her, trying to make it to the Four Major Magazine’s cover. Su Jin would cooperate however she was needed to. The only request was that the magazine had to be published before 《Gentleman Style》.
The origin of the news was genuine and reliable, definitely not some groundless accusations and rumors.
Xu Yadan was dumbstruck and the people from 《Gentleman Style》were stunned too.
《Gentleman Style》was the #1 male fashion magazine, but the sales volume was lower than a women’s fashion magazine from the start anyway. Although they were the new trend, in the end, they couldn’t be compared to the Four Major Magazine at all.
So, Su Jin was going at it with Xu Yadan for sure?
…. For such a trivial matter as the filming location, was it worth being so serious about it?
As for whether it’s worth it or not, when 《Real Me》’s sales volume for the week was computed, everyone who’d originally questioned this became quiet.
In the morning, by the university city’s “lover’s lake”, the new first year university students from the Department of Broadcasting and Hosting of Media School were being led by their senior brothers and sisters. They were reading aloud the basic teaching materials for pronunciation.
The new students were swaying where they stood, clearly tired. They grumbled in low voices about the morning class. In a corner that no one was paying attention to, Li Jun took out her phone and glanced at the time before placing her phone back into the pocket, feeling uneasy.
“Li Jun, what’s the matter with you today? You’re looking at the time every two minutes,” the roommate blinked at her and said in a low voice. “What? You got back together with your ex and are planning on a date?”
“You’re talking nonsense.” Li Jun immediately said, “I already told him that dating him is going to delay me from worshipping my idol. I need to spend all the limited time in college to worship my idol!”
The roommate was speechless.
Then, Li Jun’s small oval face turned absolutely serious. “Today’s the day that 《Real Me》is being sold! This week’s cover is our Jin Jin!” She crossed her hands together and said as if dreaming, “Jin Jin challenged herself and posed according to a famous painting. Did you guys see that picture? She was pure, holy, and noble. It doesn’t give off a lascivious or an evil feeling. That’s a real art there. If frames were placed around the picture, it’s basically a piece of art that can be put on exhibit in a museum!”
Ever since Su Jin came to their school last month to reshoot some scenes from 《Mysterious Note》, Li Jun was quick to change sides and became a resolute Su Jin fan. Not only did she change the wallpaper on her phone and computer to pictures of Su Jin, she even started to fiddle with live broadcasts, sharing “Su Jin’s makeup,” and “Su Jin’s outfits” on her Weibo. In just a month’s worth of time, she became a well-known figure within the fan circle.
However, she wasn’t exaggerating because the names really suited Su Jin.
Say, this magazine cover: the moment the magazine’s official Weibo exposed the HD picture, the entire Weibo erupted into discussion.
This time, the plan to pay respects to the painting 《Lady Godiva on Horseback》wasn’t just a casual thing. Be it the marketing team or strangers, everyone of them forwarded the Weibo post. Just this picture had gotten Su Jin “out of the circle”, as many fans who didn’t pay attention to domestic celebrities as well as western fans all forwarded the picture and sighed in shock. They talked about how “Su Jin’s existence was like a dream coming to reality”.
In the picture, she was like a newly born Venus, the goddess of beauty and love and also a little mermaid, innocent and pure surfacing from the bottom of the ocean. Poised, she revealed her bareness before the camera, her jet-black hair cascaded down her shoulders sparingly covering her front. The golden, red, pink, and orange flowers adorning her hair perfectly complemented the festooned horse’s mane.
That many eyes, that many interpretations. But one thing was common: the shocked surprise Su Jin brought them.
With just this magazine’s cover, Su Jin’s name quickly made it to the hot search and her name monopolized the rankings for two days. Once the pre-ordering of the magazine was open, this craze became even more intense! The official website’s sales volume skyrocketed. Every time someone refreshed the website, the total sales volume would be climbing in a frenzy.
20,000, 30,000, 50,000, 100, 000… The first session of pre-ordering was closed, and then restocking started a second time, and then a third…
Not only did Su Jin’s fans throw away money recklessly to buy stacks of magazines, but also the uncos* whom she’d surprised and amazed, followed the crowd contributing to the sales volume. Men placed the picture by their bedheads treating Su Jin as their lover in dreams, while framed it as a motivation to gain a lean figure.
[E/D: uncos are strangers in terms of media language. Here it’d mean those who are either not a part of her fans or the entertainment industry in general.]
The third restocking was closed the previous night and yet, there were still many uncos who’d just realized and complained that they weren’t able to buy copies.
When morning class was finally over, Li Jun couldn’t be bothered to eat breakfast in the canteen. Thrusting her materials in her roommate’s hand, she hurriedly rushed to the gate.
The roommate was calling behind her and asking, “Li Jun, what are you doing?”
Without pausing, Li Jun said, “I pre-ordered a copy, but it won’t come until next week. I’m going to the magazine booth by the school gate to steal a copy of 《Real Me》first!”
Who knew that by the time she finished talking, the eyes of all the guys in the class would be glimmering! One after another eager voices sounded.
“Li Jun, you’re going to buy a copy of 《Real Me》?”
“Good classmate, I won’t be polite with you. Please bring me a copy as well.”
“I want one, I want one as well. Buy me two. I’ll buy one to look through it and the other one… hehehe.”
“Scram! What vulgar words are you trying to say in front of the school beauty? Li Jun, don’t bother with him. Remember to bring me a copy as well!”
Two days ago, the magazine booth by the school had already hung the advertising poster for this week’s magazine. Su Jin was riding a white horse like the Sun Goddess. She was proud and calm, looking at everyone elegantly. Which young and vigorous male could endure such charm? Whenever they passed by the magazine booth, they couldn’t bear to pass without a few extra peeks at the poster.
A fashion magazine was just 20 bucks and anyone could afford it, but letting them go to a magazine booth to buy a women’s fashion magazine? No, no, no. Nevermind!
They talked amongst themselves and in the end, every male in the classroom had placed an“order” with Li Jun. Even their senior brothers who were teaching them in morning class joined along the show and asked Li Jun to buy them copies as well.
Li Jun just found out how many hidden fans Su Jin had in the class! Although they don’t pay much attention to Su Jin’s work, but facing such a beautiful cover, which man could maintain their rationality?
As Li Jun strode out of her classroom and to the gates, she carried the hope of an entire class’, and upon calculating the total books she needed to purchase, she immediately got on her bike and hurried on.
Yet, even after making it to the booth at lightning speed, she was greeted by owner tippy-toeing and hanging something on the door.
Just one line written with yellow chalk on the small blackboard was more eye-grabbing than the biggest billboard in the world.
《Real Me》is sold out! Don’t ask me for more!
How… how could it be?!
Li Jun glanced at her watch. It wasn’t even eight and the first class had yet to begin. The majority of the students in the university city were still lazing in bed or sleeping. Who would steal the magazines from her?!
The owner of the magazine booth saw Li Jun looking dazedly at the small backboard and instantly knew that she was also Su Jin’s fan. Ever since two days ago when he’d hung the advertisement on the door, every day there were at least dozens of people asking when the magazine would be in stock. Don’t underestimate the size of the magazine booth, since it was opened by the school gates, many passed by it every day. The daily sales volume was considerably huge, and the owner specially doubled the stocks of magazines.
But, who knew that the moment he opened the door, it would be sold out!
