Chapter 7: Introduction
And after Mary had left with those wishful thoughts, Elise thoughtfully sipped her tea.
“Yes, there’s no way I’ll be able to think of a solution like this.”
Her gaze sunk.
“There’s only one solution.”
She placed her cup down, and muttered to herself.
“Facing it head on. I have to ask the Emperor myself. There’s no other way.”
Right now, Elise’s thoughts were Song Jihyun’s. She might look soft, but she was the doctor Song Jihyun to the bones. In her last life, she had never tried to plan for a way around the problem. She always faced it head on.
Cutting the ‘Gordian knot’—meaning cutting through an extremely difficult problem —was her favorite method of solving her problems as a doctor. ‘I might be punished.’ It hadn’t been that long since she had asked for the marriage, and now she was trying to cancel it? Even if the Emperor considered her his niece, he would still be mad.
‘But there’s nothing I can do. Even if I get punished, I should endure it. This engagement needs to be canceled.’
She began to make plans. Even if she cut the Gordian knot, she needed an efficient plan. She tried to find a method that would somehow lessen the Emperor’s anger.
The day to meet the Emperor came sooner than expected. He had invited the father and daughter pair, Marquis El and Elise.
‘He’s trying to see what the future Crown Princess is like, right?’
This wasn’t the first time she saw the Emperor. Since he was close to the Marquis, she had seen him since she was young, and he adored her like a niece.
“What kind of style should I order from the designer Evian, my lady?”
“No, I’ll just wear something I have.”
“Yes, but…will you be okay?”
“Yes, I already have a lot of dresses now anyway.”
Elise thought while nodding her head, ‘It’s a waste of money.’ Every time she went to a ball or the palace, she wore a new dress. It was always of the highest quality. If she sold all the dresses she had worn once, it would probably come out to be an immense amount of money. ‘I don’t need to do that.’
During her life as Song Jihyun, she had never put much care in her appearance. She didn’t have the time nor the freedom to, and more than anything, she realized that it didn’t really matter after dealing with life and death’s extreme. ‘Since the most important thing is inner beauty.’ With those thoughts, she went into her dress room. Even though she had thrown away most of them, there were still enough dresses to make her go blind from all the shininess.
“What kind of dress should we pick? How’s this?”
Mary pulled out a red dress. It was as fancy as a rose. With her snow white skin, Elise would look like a flower wearing it.”
“No, isn’t there something more appropriate than that?”
“What about this?”
“No, it’s too extravagant…”
Mary pulled out this and that thinking of her lady’s preferences, but Elise shook her head. Elise thoughtfully looked at her dress room. ‘There’s nothing to wear.’
Different from her first life, she lived her second life as a doctor, so she hated fancy clothes. ‘Scrubs and a white doctor’s coat is the best. But I can’t meet the Emperor wearing that. Isn’t there something that’s a little for calm? But it can’t look too simple. It needs to be neat and noble-looking at the same time…’ She was meeting the Emperor, so she couldn’t wear just anything. She looked for something that was proper and graceful at the same time.
“I’ll go with this.”
“With this? Will you be okay?”
“Yes, I like this one.”
Elise nodded her head at the neat white dress.
“You’re so pretty, that a fancier one looks better on you.”
Mary pouted, but Elise just laughed.
“Yes, my lady?”
“Did the thing I requested of the butler arrive?”
“Yes, my lady, it’ll arrive soon at the residence.”
“Alright, thanks. And confirm with the butler again so it arrives on time.”
“Yes, my lady.”
Elise looked outside the window. ‘Three days from now.’ It wasn’t an exaggeration to say the rest of her life depended on this meeting with the Emperor. ‘No matter what.’
She had a determined expression.
