Chapter 23: War Begins (1)
“The week is over. A big defeat.
“But we are not resigned to admit defeat! I want to give them a beating! An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth!
“We are going to teach them that cheating does not equal strength! I want everyone to lend me your strength! Please lend me your strength! Defeat them! Eradicate them! Let them taste the might of Camelot!
“This if for me and for all of you! Everyone, lend me your strength! Let them know that we are invincible! Let them know that we are not merely composed of empty shells! Let us raise our sword to the light of victory and defeat them under the glory of our king! Let them know that we cannot be overrun by the likes of those savages!
“Everybody, lend me your strength!”
The war came as scheduled.
The Gauls invaded from the upper reaches of the river.
Though the estuary, the lower ends or the mouth of the river was blocked by the knights of Leyton, the damage and losses the Gauls incurred were still heavy.
After repelling the first wave of attack, the Gauls reorganized their fleet and sailed downstream towards the English Channel.
It was unknown whether their objective was the Roman Empire or the kingdom of Camelot.
But regardless, the knights did not dare relax their vigilance.
However, it was exactly this way a surprise attack suddenly struck at the mouth of the English Channel using the monsoon and the currents of the river to plan a counterattack in a small English town called Rye.
The small territory could not withstand a single attack and the might of the entire Gallic fleet. In less than twenty four hours, Rye was captured and defeated.
The Gauls of whom which suffered a setback from Leyton and his knights took revenge by plundering Rye and turned it into a living hell.
King Uther was furious and sent a three-way cavalry team and marched towards the Gallic savages. Andrea Ettorek also sent three hundred knights to assist the cavalries.
As for the rest, they were to defend their home country. Who knows when those savages would suddenly launch a surprise attack?
Kailar continued smiling upon hearing the news, yet inwardly his mind continuously churned as he calculated the total gains and losses.
It’s no wonder Uther Pendragon had Andrea Ettorek set a territory in the southern part of Camelot. Red Leaf was the first target of the Gauls.
A lot of things became clear with this explanation.
With such a strategic location, not only can the king defend his country, he can also quell any rebellion taking place within.
Kailar placed his palm under his chin whilst thinking over a certain matter thoughtfully.
He’d reached a relative understanding regarding King Uther’s motives.
What he did not understand was why King Uther, who had no offsprings, painstakingly laid out the plans for his kingdom after his death. With his wisdom, it should be known that without an offspring to inherit his throne, the country would soon fall into disarray on the level of the Spring and Autumn Warring States Period.
On what basis does he believe the people would obediently follow his will?
Well, no matter.
He shook his head and put any lingering thoughts away before placing the sheepskin scroll on the desk and walked out the room.
Arriving in the military sized practice field, he found Gawain and Attolis fighting and training tirelessly.
Compared to their first meeting, their progress could be said to be godly.
After dueling against each other, the two knight apprentice surmised over their experience and fought once more, the cycle an never ending repeat. Their improvement during this short timeframe was painfully obvious.
“Let’s go. It’s time to work.” Kailar called out to Gawain and Attolis causing the duo to halt to a stop.
In the past two months, the two constantly battled against each other, using their partner as means to better themselves. Now there’s finally an opportunity to show off their gains.
“Sibo, tell father that I’ll be heading to Nottingham Forest. Most likely I’ll be staying there for a while so there’s no need to look for me.”
Sibo nodded. “Yes, master.”
“Also, I’ll probably be there for seven to eight nights. Prepare yourself.”
After instructing Sibo of matters regarding the winery business and the manor estate, Kailar and the two knight apprentice made way towards Nottingham Forest.
“Kai, are we really going to Nottingham Forest?”
