Chapter 20: Attolis (2)
The sound of birds chirped above the azure as a gust of wind flew by.
“Attolis.” After a moment of silence, the child apprentice replied.
Kailar who’d never taken a proper look at the golden-haired apprentice before finally looked at his eyes with a startling sensation.
The apprentice’s face seemed soft and delicate—rather feminine too. His golden blonde hair was neatly combed into place and such accentuated his calm and serious manner.
At first glance, he looked like an angry loli but after careful examination, Kailar grew confused.
He did not know whether this knight apprentice was man or woman.
Looking at this apprentice’s heroic appearance, he seemed rather beautiful and could even pass off as both genders. But in any case, Kailar believed this person as just a beautiful and delicate man.
“What’s your name?” Looking directly into his eyes, Kailar asked once more.
“Attolis.” The voice was thick as if deliberately changing its range but Kailar didn’t place too much attention towards it. He didn’t notice the sudden change in the apprentice’s voice range.
“Alright.” Kailar nodded. “Listen to my orders. Anyways, let’s begin.”
Kailar commanded the two to fight against each other. He needed to know their current level in terms of technique, speed, and strength.
When he watched, his face flushed red and rather ashamed for thinking this world’s fighting skills were lame.
How close-minded was he?
Kailar watched the two knight apprentice collide. Their sword clashed with each other in the open space. Clash after clash caused sparks to fly in the air.
Their exquisite skill sparked Kailar’s heart and his negative view towards western martial arts slowly turned. Such skill, such brevity, such strength… he knew he’d never match up to them. It’s no wonder they were listed as the strongest in his generation. If he had no magic, he’d be killed by this warriors in no time. Not to mention, they were around ten years of age!
If they were older, their combat abilities would surely multiply numerous times. By then, Kailar would not be able to stop nor block their advances even with the added help of magic.
As he continued to watch the duel, who would garner victory and who would suffer in defeat quickly showed.
Gawain who was slightly older had the advantage of experience and strength. It had shown in the beginning. At first, it looked like Gawain had the upper hand, but as time drew to a close, the other party’s technique slowly gained the upper hand.
Soon after, Attolis quickly gained momentum under the intense clash which caused Gawain to collapse under pressure due to waves after waves of continuous onslaught.
Then, finally, Gawain was caught in defeat. His sword was knocked away followed by a sword pointed directly to his throat.
“I-I… I lost.” Gawain admitted weakly. He was depressed as his eyes drooped in bitterness.
“Do you know why you lost?” Kailar smiled and asked.
The battle between the two gave Kailar a sense of fleeting happiness and also time to reflect on their skill.
Gawain quickly raised his head and looked at his cousin fiercely. “You know why I lost?”
“Everything.” Kailar pointed out.
“You see your opponent as weak due to his soft and delicate features which causes you to undermine his skills and technique.
“Then there’s the issue of being impatience. You want to end the battle too quickly. You allow your emotions to get the best of you which in return affects your state of mind.
“There’s also the stamina which you seem to lack. Your opponent noticed this and hence took advantage of it. Also, you could have won. After all, your opponent’s strength couldn’t match up to yours. Yet.”
Kailar shook his head.
The building foundation of martial arts was highly important and strength itself is one of the most important factors. These two apprentices have little to no difference and usually, those who had the advantage of strength tend to win the upper hand. Just that, this Gawain was truly too emotional and impatient causing him to lose to Attolis whose strength was a bit lacking compared to Gawain.
“Let me have a look at the little sage’s skill.” A sword was pointed towards Kailar, it’s voice a little too proud and arrogant.
