Chapter 37 - An Awakened Predator
As their eyes met, the woman hiding behind the pillar made a surprised expression. She looked like a small creature that had been caught cowering in a bush. He did not understand why she was standing there but made his way towards her anyway. At first, Isabel stared blankly at him. Then, she looked surprised and stepped back.
He had never encountered anyone who stepped back after seeing him.
After glancing around the banquet hall, she hurriedly made her way to the entrance.
He had tried to go after her but was impeded by the people crowding around him. By the time he managed to shake them off and go after her, he could no longer see her in the hall. She had fast feet for a petite woman.
When Agares ran out of the banquet hall, Cien, who had been waiting outside, was surprised and chased after him. Was he already trying to escape? “Oh no. You’ve been rejected.”
“Where are you going?”
“Wait a minute. Calm down a second, Your Highness.” Cien stood in front of him, blocking him. He was frowning.
‘Look at this man. Wake up, Your Highness.’
“What are you going to do when you get there? The Grand Duke visiting the house of an unmarried young lady out of the blue and in the middle of the night, at that? I am afraid of how the rumors will spread. On top of that, you’re leaving without even saying anything to the host of the banquet after you’ve been in his care to go to a baron’s residence? I can tell you for sure that I will not be able to amend that.”
Such an ostentatious move was something even the Emperor could not handle for him. Unless he suddenly became a god who could turn back time, Cien had to dissuade Agares from his pursuit. Agares, who had been trying to get past Cien, stopped in his tracks.
“Will you take responsibility for that lady’s life?”
Cien’s remarks were offensive, but he was not wrong. Agares paused and sighed as he swept his hair back.
‘Looks like he’s calmed down.’ Cien also breathed a sigh of relief. He had been very worried about what to do in case the Grand Duke did not come to his senses and tried to head for the barony anyway.
Chasing after her would have been a very bad move if she had really intended to run away. However, if she had run away in order to provoke him, then she had maneuvered herself perfectly since men had the habit of chasing after their prey. And the Grand Duke was no different.
He was usually idle, like a predator lying in wait. All kinds of powerful people flocked to him. Women did not leave his side no matter how much he tried to shake them off, so he found clingy women even more unattractive. Her reacting like a frightened, small creature would awaken his normally dormant hunting instincts instead.
And now the statement was coming true. His predatory senses had been activated, but it seemed as if his prey was really trying to run away.
How had Agares found himself in such a predicament? As someone who had aided the Grand Duke his entire life, Cien had never seen a scenario like this before. He laughed internally as he watched Agares clench his teeth.
He had called her Cinderella before, and now Cien realized that he was right. This Cinderella had managed to capture the prince’s heart and run away as soon as the clock struck twelve, awakening the prince’s hunting instincts.
‘Speaking of, she’s quite good at running away.’ As Cien watched Agares frown in dissatisfaction, he glanced in a random direction with admiration since Cinderella had left no sign as to where she had run.
She was hard to capture. He knew that well after he had lost her that night. Despite knowing her identity now, he acknowledged that he could not simply go to the barony or attempt to communicate with her without good reason. As Cien had said, Agares knew best what kind of rumors would arise from his actions. Now that he had solved the problem of finding her, he had to figure out how to once again catch this Cinderella who could run away faster than he could even blink.
