Chapter 138 - Refuge (19)
“How are you? I didn’t think I would see you here.”
“Good… How are you?” I asked awkwardly.
Naomi smiled, looking between me and Grayson. “Did you two get along? I thought so last time too, but did Grayson make another mistake again?”
I couldn’t say no, so I kept quiet. Grayson beamed and opened his arms instead. “I tried my best to get along. Now, are you going to reward me?”
“Wait a sec. You’re so impatient.” Naomi smiled and lightly pushed Grayson away. The two didn’t look like “just friends” no matter how I saw it.
I asked, getting curious, “Um, since when did you two…?”
Naomi laughed at my careful question and replied, “You saw last time, no? Although we grew close since before then.”
“While you were still seeing Mr. Pittman?” I asked, taken aback.
Naomi burst into a peal of laughter. “No way. That would be too shameless, even for me. Keith hadn’t called me in a while, so I was thinking it was about time that we broke up when I met Grayson at a party.”
“I see…” Then, I recalled too late that I didn’t properly relay the breakup message to her. I rushed to bring it up, but Naomi spoke first.
“I checked the present that you left behind. But that movie–is it really all right that I do it? I don’t think the role fits my image.”
The role that was offered to her was that of a virtuous woman who lived her entire life pining for one man. It wasn’t a part that would normally be offered to Naomi, who was an infamous maneater. I relayed Keith’s exact words to her. “Mr. Pittman said that your acting is excellent, so you would be able to pull off the role well, and the unexpected difference in your image could yield a lot of attention.”
“Keith complimented my acting? I’m so thankful.” Naomi beamed brightly. It was the first time seeing such a clean and relaxed breakup. Was it because she was going out with Grayson? I felt strange and out of place seeing Naomi smiling while naturally clinging to Grayson’s arm. Naomi continued, “I signed the documents. I’ll send it to your office. Thanks for putting up with me so far, Yeonwoo. It’s too bad we ended like this.”
She extended a hand to shake, and I gripped it lightly before letting go.
“I look forward to the film,” I said.
Naomi grinned, then she asked Grayson, “The male lead is played by Chase Miller. Can I eat him up?”
Even though her question sounded serious to me, Grayson burst out laughing, sounding truly amused. “Please go ahead.” Then, he added while smiling, “It’s a good thing you’re a beta. It would be bothersome if you could be marked.”
“Why is that?” Naomi asked.
Grayson laughed again. “Obviously because we need to differentiate between s*x partners and marriage partners.”
Naomi’s face grew stony for the first time. What Grayson said wasn’t different from telling her that he was out of her league. Since I was used to hearing such arrogant and disparaging words, I was probably the only one here who knew how Naomi felt right now.
I wouldn’t read Grayson Miller’s obituary in the morning newspaper tomorrow, would I?
Along with the grisly thought, I imagined the subheading being along the lines of “First-hand Witnessed by Mr. Pittman’s secretary.” I wanted to quickly leave the frigid atmosphere that settled between us when someone pulled in my shoulders from behind.
I felt instantly relieved when I smelled the sweet scent from behind. Keith held me in his arms and said from above my head, “What’s everyone doing here?”
