Keith Pittman’s expression remained unchanging as if he had expected it. “I just thought that it would suit you well.”
“Nobody else seems to think so,” Naomi replied cheekily.
Apathetically still, Keith replied, “Then you can prove whether they’re right or I’m right.”
“Oh my,” she laughed in a way that jingled like a bell. Unlike her image as Hollywood’s sexiest actress, her giggle sounded like that of a playful child. Looking a little happier, Naomi looked around Keith and blinked. “What happened to your partner, though? I thought I had seen her a little while ago. Was I mistaken?”
‘There’s no way that this man would attend a party alone,’ Naomi thought to herself. However, Keith didn’t seem keen on telling her. All he did was pull out his cigarette case and take a cigarette to his mouth. It seemed like he either didn’t know where his partner was or didn’t care at all.
Naomi was starting to regret having asked a needless question when she spotted the director in the corner of her eye. She bade us farewell and quickly left.
Murmurs softly continued around the two Extreme Alphas. However, they didn’t say anything to each other. All they did was silently stare at each other.
Keith was the first to speak. “Grayson kept following me around and nagging me for days.”
Chase smiled cynically as he was not surprised. But he was still a little curious as to how Keith would react. Keith skillfully lit his cigarette and exhaled deeply, leaving a long trail of smoke.
“If you really don’t want to do it, you don’t need to force yourself. Of course, you’d have to pay the penalty as per the contract,” Keith said, his voice void of any emotion. He was certainly being serious, and so was Chase.
“I don’t intend to pay a penalty,” replied Chase.
“All right,” answered Keith.
And that was it. Keith didn’t say anything else. Silence took over for a moment.
Keith brought the cigarette to his lips and muttered softly, “It’s not easy to live as Grayson’s little brother.”
Chase laughed a little. “Would have been better if you were my older brother.”
It was unclear whether Chase was joking or not. Keith remained expressionless and showed no reaction at all. Keith exhaled once again, and white smoke trailed across the air. He snapped his wrist a few times with the cigarette between his slender fingers, flicking off the ashes. “My siblings would certainly disagree.”
‘If they had Grayson as their older brother just for a day, they’d be thanking God that Keith was their older brother,’ Chase thought stoically.
Keith flicked off the ashes of a half-burned cigarette on an ashtray that a passing waiter was carrying. Just then, Keith’s gaze darted to one side. A long trail of smoke rose from the cigarette hanging between his fingers.
Strangely enough, he stared intently in one direction, frozen to his spot, and left before Chase could say anything else. Keith was gone in an instant; now left hanging, Chase lit his cigarette and remained standing in the same place for a while.
The sound of people chatting among themselves rang in Chase’s ears. He tried gulping down his champagne, but it was nowhere enough to make him drunk. He already knew that he had to drink all the champagne prepared for the party in order for him to get wasted.
Laughter and meaningless chatter sounded from all around him, but he was alone. A soft sigh escaped his mouth. With a cigarette lodged between his lips, Chase emptily blinked his eyes. He was suddenly craving some cool air.
He was about to turn around and walk out of the party hall when an unfamiliar woman stepped in front of him. Chase instinctively creased his brows. The woman smiled and chirped, “Hello, Mr. Miller. Would it be all right if I just called you Chase?”
Chase glowered down at her. No matter what he said, she would just call him whatever she wanted.
“Nice to meet you, Chase. I’m Veronica Lee. We’ll be in the upcoming movie together. You can just call me Vicky.” As expected, she called him by his name right away and amicably taught him her own nickname. However, Chase maintained an indifferent expression and showed no reaction. All he was thinking about was how he could get out of this hall.
Although his cold reaction was enough to embarrass anyone, Vicky was persistent. Still with a smile, she continued, “I always wanted to meet you, really. I’ve never seen an Extreme Alpha before. I did also meet Mr. Pittman today, but you’re really beautiful.”
A glimmer of innocent praise took over Vicky’s face. This wasn’t Chase’s first time meeting someone who had so openly showered him with compliments, but it also certainly didn’t happen very often. Chase squinted his eyes, trying to figure out what she wanted. In any case, it was probably either just the curiosity of coming face-to-face with a rare creature or she was trying to connect with a network using the popularity of a top actor—perhaps both.
