Chapter 6: Weakened Roar (2)
“Eh?” Norn was stunned and unable to move.
Even Roland who was caught in a troublesome situation donned a confused look. He turned around, tilted his head, and questioned Ivan. “Teacher?”
“He’s cowardly and faint-hearted. Tell me, do you want such a person to be your king?” Yi Fan asked rhetorically, refusing to give a more detailed and elaborate explanation.
Thereafter, he spoke no longer. His aura exuding a sense of dignified might and he all the more left unaware of the sort of profound image he left in the hearts of the two girls, Hill and Guinevere, behind him.
“…I… I understand.” Roland stuttered. He understood fairly well the underlying meaning of the words spoken.
He breathed a sigh of relief. A boulder had been lifted from his heart.
Roland looked ahead and threw a glance over the candidates. “Sir Gray of Exeter City please step up!”
Norn’s expression grew solemnly grim and gloomy sensing that he was disqualified from the kingship selection just as quick as he was to mouth complaints. He thought of resorting to other means but after looking at Yi Fan and Roland once more, he realized the gap of strength between them was too strong. Norn could only wallow in hateful despair as he retreated.
The other candidates participating in the selection parted their lips, shock written on their faces due to Yi Fan’s sudden actions but after a short while, they realized the situation was just as good for it meant one less competitor to compete with.
Using Norn as an example of what would happen, the next candidate was more the wiser. As soon as Roland announced his name, Grey quickly rushed towards the podium.
Grey’s eyes inadvertently landed on Yi Fan and looked at him with such awe, appreciation, and respect before turning back to Roland. “What are the specific contents of the selection?”
“Ah, the contents.” Roland twisted his body and pointed towards the longsword inserted on the sword stone. “As long as you can pull out the longsword, then you will be crowned king.”
“Eh? It’s that simple?” Although there was an overwhelming gap in strength between him and Norn, Grey was nevertheless, an honorable aristocratic knight with a strong body and bulging muscles. Pulling out the sword should be rather easy.
“Is it??” Roland revealed an awkward smile. “But beforehand, you must know that you are only given one chance. If you fail to pull the longsword out of the sword stone, you will step off the podium and the next candidate will come.”
“Of course.” Grey did not refute Roland’s statement. Facing the longsword, hints of excitement coursed throughout his body.
‘It’s good to be the first one. Norn is actually a good idiot for giving me such an opportunity.’
The other participants pushed each other, each one dying to get front-seat-row. When they heard the contents of the selection was so simple, they again moved like a horde to the front.
Yi Fan wrinkled his brows, unable to bear seeing the disorderliness.
From beginning to end, there was no lack of eager people ready to step foot on the platform as the next candidate. Apart from Arthuria, there were only three or four people amongst the 30 who maintained a calm disposition. They were the real ones and Yi Fan believed that they had the qualifications to become king.
Meanwhile, Grey stood in front of the Excalibur. Yi Fan looked at his expression. It was evident that until now, he did not regard drawing Excalibur from the stone as anything difficult.
Though Yi Fan said so much to Roland priori, he’d never drawn the sword so knew next to nothing as to what would happen next. Subconsciously, Yi Fan stared intently at Grey’s movements for fear that he’d miss an important moment.
“Get up!” Grey grabbed the hilt with one hand and roared, using all his strength and believing that he could pull Excalibur out of the stone.
But in the next moment, the entire square was immersed in a strange silence, because the Excalibur that looked lightweight, remained motionless despite Grey’s pulling.
Yi Fan hadn’t the chance to breathe a sigh of relief for Grey, who’s expression turned serious, spread his feet wide apart and held the hilt tightly with both hands.
“Get up!” He roared even louder.
Grey had used the majority of his strength to the point of becoming swollen. His muscles bulged tightly and even his armor made of steel seemed squeezed, but even so, the Excalibur was still unmoving. There was no movement, none whatsoever!
“Sir Grey, you’ve failed!” Knowing that he would try again, Yi Fan stopped him. “As said earlier, everyone only has one chance.”
“Damn… damn…!” Grey snarled loudly. He looked at the Excalibur in front of him and could help but reveal a desperate look.
Even if he had the power that was several times larger, Grey had no possibility of success. Not only was this Grey’s bitter-ending, even the other candidates who’ve yet to step foot on the podium sighed and felt the same way.
Norn who despised Yi Fan and Roland for his direct disqualification could not help but reveal a bitter smile after seeing the scene. He turned and left the avenue thereafter for staying any longer had no meaning other than to humiliate himself.
“The third person… Sir James of Auburn!”
