Chapter 95 - My Family
“I asked if you want to start a business with me,” Amelia repeated, shaking her head casually as if she was only asking what Helene wanted to eat. “So you’re saying you immediately agreed to a plan that put your life at risk just to save your sibling…” I knew what was going on because of the novel, but experiencing it in real life was another matter. It was like the difference between a drawing and a photograph.
“You have such determination, courage, and sense.” She wasn’t lacking any key quality. Even those who knew what was going on might find it difficult to take action. All things considered, she was a rare talent. “I have just the job for someone as amazing as you. I think you’ll like it too. But I have one condition attached to it.”
Helene, who was still in shock from the sudden turn of events, continued to stare blankly at Amelia. “I’ll help you save your sibling.” Helene’s eyes grew wide in amazement. This was the one condition she could never refuse. “… Can you really heal them?”
“I can’t say for certain, but I know this kind of disease. Even if I can’t fully heal them, I can at least make sure they’re safe. I bet I’m more trustworthy than those people you were with.” Amelia knew the future. Helene’s sibling didn’t survive. The people who made the deal with her had lied. Her sibling was only collateral to them. They tried to trick both of them, but Helene survived and promised to take revenge on the ones responsible for her sibling’s death.
She went into hiding, took on a new identity, and became stronger, coming back into the world as Kais’s helper. I hadn’t recognized Helene from the beginning because she had changed every aspect of herself but her name. Even her personality. In any event, she was motivated only by dumb luck. “And if you want, you can live with your sibling. I’ll find a place for the two of you.”
There was a quiver in Helene’s eyes, “Why… why are you being so kind to me?”
“Hm? It’s only natural to be good to talented people.” It was easy to treat people like slaves, but Amelia didn’t want to do that. She didn’t like to exploit people through force. Amelia didn’t want a slave who would blindly follow her every command; she wanted a companion who could help her.
The only way to gain someone’s trust was to get them to trust you. “I really want you on my side,” Amelia reiterated once more. As they say, the third time’s the charm. Helene’s gaze soon turned teary, and she started to cry all of a sudden. “Don’t cry! Tears are the weapons of beautiful women!” Amelia became flustered, which made Helene burst into laughter.
“Now let’s sign our contract,” Afraid of losing her golden opportunity to any delay, Amelia took out the contract she had prepared beforehand. “Is this a slave contract?”
“No way! This is a contract for life. Although the contract period lasts until death, you’ll be given reasonable payment.” Helene threw all her hopes into this contract as the last resort to save her sibling. As soon as she signed it, a new strength entered the two of them. Her previous contract was exploitative, and she could tell that this one was different.
When the contract was done, Amelia still had one unanswered question, “Helene, I want to ask you something…”
“Go ahead.”
“Why do you want to save your sibling so badly?” With her talents, her sibling was only holding her back. That was the case in the novel. It was unheard of for someone to be so caught up with their family. ‘Is it something that I can’t understand as an only child?’
Helene’s face stiffened at Amelia’s question. But she understood what the princess was getting at. “If they die, I’ll be alone,” she replied simply.
Amelia understood the feeling of being all alone in the world, which Priscilla had also felt. She knew she would probably feel the same way without Miltiades. Looking into Helene’s determined eyes, she had a sudden thought: did Kais feel this way too? But she didn’t know the answer.
