Chapter 5 - The Magician
Ella walked into Evan’s drawing room with a huge smile. Evan, compared to moments ago, calmly welcomed her. After he ran away, he realized his sister was bluffing. At the same time, he felt sorry for pranking Ella in the first place. From the very beginning, he knew Ella wouldn’t be able to fend him off. With all that in mind, Evan decided to treat Ella like a real lady. He escorted her to the couch and brought out two boxes. The boxes were embroidered with silver linings and with a luxurious ribbon. These gifts were difficult for Evan to get. Because of that, he wanted Ella to see the amount of effort he used to get them for her.
“I went through so much to get these in my hands. It took materials from three different cities and ten master craftsmen from five different temples to create these gifts. I also had to go as far as the Tower of Magi, and you make fun of me like that? I almost didn’t want to give them to you. Be thankful that I’m giving them to you.”
Evan, as he finished complimenting himself, signaled to the butler from behind to open the boxes. Within the two luxurious boxes were a wristlet corsage and a boutonniere. There were seven small flowers made out of silver that flowed faintly of cleansing powers on the corsage. The leaves surrounding the flowers were made out of gold. On the leaves were droplets made out of pearls, which shined beautifully. Ella lifted her wrist. She then carefully placed the corsage on her wrist. The corsage on her frail wrist began to shine with a silvery glow. It was a mesmerizing sight.
Mesmerized by the corsage, Ella completely forgot where she was. Even as the light began to fade away and as the corsage was placed back into the box, Ella couldn’t take her eyes off her wrist. For the first time, Ella finally felt like the protagonist of this novel.
‘Magic! It’s real magic!’ Ella’s eyes shined with excitement. As Evan watched Ella’s reaction, he completely misunderstood the reason for her excitement. He thought that Ella couldn’t stop imagining the crown prince with the boutonniere pinned onto his chest.
“I see that you like it.”
“I love it!” replied Ella.
Ella’s excitement made Evan jealous. It was often said that in a relationship the person who loves the other much more was the weaker one. In this relationship with the crown prince, Ella was definitely the weaker person. This corsage and the boutonniere were proof of his sister’s love for the prince. Normally, the wristlet corsage was a gift from a man for his lover’s debut. It wasn’t something that a woman would go out of her way to purchase for herself. Luciella, however, didn’t care about tradition and instead prepared her own corsage while the crown prince was locked up in the academy. Not only that, but she also prepared a boutonniere for her partner. In the past, Evan looked into the academy to see whether or not the prince had prepared anything for his sister’s debut. As expected, the prince hadn’t prepared anything. The prince wasn’t the type to prepare for anything. At the very least, Evan didn’t like her sister’s future husband.
“Can’t you stop staring at it?”
“But it’s so amazing.”
“What?” said Evan as he realized that something was a bit off.
He then realized that Ella’s excitement was directed towards Estinu, a magician.
‘Wait, it wasn’t because of the prince?’ The thought made Evan burst into laughter. The sound of Evan’s sudden laughter surprised Ella. She then gave Evan a strange look.
“It’s nothing. I was just laughing because I realized that I made the right decision in bringing him here. I guess this is your first time seeing a magician. Do you have any more tricks up your sleeve for my sister? I will pay you handsomely,” asked Evan as he turned towards Estinu.
Although Estinu was only a Second Circle magician, he was still one of the few magicians left on this continent. He was to be respected. Evan’s ultimate goal was to have Estinu work with his family. The only way to keep in contact with Estinu was through money. A magician was a worthy investment.
“It’s quite alright, sir. It’s an honor to meet the famed lady myself. I’ll do my best to make her happy in any way that I can,” answered Estinu.
Estinu then waved his hands elegantly. As he waved, various words popped up above his hands. Soon, those words transformed into golden butterflies and they fluttered around Ella. Golden sparkles were released from their wings and some laid on top of Ella’s head. The butterflies eventually disappeared leaving behind shiny particles on her hair. Once again, Estinu waved his arms, which created a mirror that reflected Ella’s sparkling hair. Ella was astonished by all of this. The magic show was enough to show her the difference between ordinary magic and magic from the Ledeem continent. After the war had ended, magic lost its purpose and began to disappear. Magic that still had a purpose remained. Estinu was a magician with skill and charm. He was skilled at charming a woman’s mind. Not only that he was skilled in engraving and alchemy. Estinu was a worthy man; One that Evan had been looking for. Ella laughed as she noticed Evan’s desperation for Estinu.
‘He likes him so much.’ Ella remembered reading in the novel that Evan tried so hard to persuade Estinu to work for the Constance family. He was so desperate for Estinu that he built a lab, storage room, and even a separate house. It was only after all these gifts, Estinu agreed to work for the Constance family. Because of all these gifts, there were many rumors that Evan at the time was a crazy shopaholic. Although the family had a lot of money to spend, Ella couldn’t let Evan waste all that money. She had to stop Evan.
“The magician will stay with our family even without you looking at him like that. Wouldn’t you agree, sir?”
Estinu slightly flinched at that question, but he soon smiled as he looked back at Ella. “Why do you think so, my lady?”
“I’ve heard that magicians don’t really leave their towers much. Sometimes they do visit other places when they’re paid handsomely just like yourself right now. They, however, never show their magic unless they were already paid. I’m sure you want something from me. Don’t you?”
Ella knew what Estinu wanted. Estinu wanted to go into the Royal library and read the Magic Grimoire. It was the only copy left in the world. In the novel, Estinu approached Luciella for a favor only after he had received all those gifts from Evan. Luciella was mad when she found out about Estinu’s motive and didn’t allow him to go into the library. Ella, on the other hand, wanted to show him the library. She was curious as to why he wanted to read this book so badly.
“I’ll only grant your wish if you decide to become our family’s magician.”
“That’s a very intriguing answer. I’m actually here to become the family’s magician. You don’t actually know what I want, my lady.”
Although she was aware of what he wanted, she pretended not to know.
“What do you want?”
“Are you curious about it?”
“Of course. Did you think I wasn’t going to ask about it?”
Estinu appeared to want to say something. Instead, he nodded his head slightly and answered, “After you go to the Royal Palace can you let me into the Royal library?”
“Of course. I’ll do that for you.”
Ella nodded casually unlike Evan whose expression became cold.
“I don’t like it when people approach me with a hidden motive. You’ll never speak a word about what happened in this room. It won’t be good for either you or Ella. Do you understand?” warned Evan.
“Yes, sir. I wouldn’t have spoken a word about this if she didn’t ask me.”
Evan glared at Estinu. He realized what might have unfolded had Ella not asked Estinu. Through this, he reconfirmed his beloved sister’s wisdom. He looked at her with affectionate eyes. As he turned back to Estinu, his eyes became cold once again. He was surely fit to become the future Duke Constance.
“I see what you were planning to do. I’ll pretend I didn’t find out. Don’t you dare try to play this trick again in the future. Also, be thankful to Ella. If you had followed through with your plan, you would never set foot into the Royal Palace,” warned Evan.
“I’ve prepared a room and a lab for you. Ask the butler if you need anything and he will serve you.”
Estinu realized his mistake and he bowed for an apology as he left the room. When he left, Evan’s face brightened with happiness. Originally, he had planned to have Estinu as a guest. He even created a budget for his plan to convince Estinu. Fortunately, he didn’t need to use any of it. Thinking about the number of profits he could make with Estinu working for the family brought a smile to Evan’s face.
“Do you like him that much?”
“Can you see it?”
“I’m sure anyone can see it.”
I heard that Drolin hired a magician, so I thought we could do the same. Father said that I was going too far with it. Compared to what Drolin did, we practically got him for free. I’m sure father will be pleased,” said Evan as he held up his lukewarm tea to enjoy its scent.
It didn’t appear that his excitement would fade that easily. For now, what’s important to Ella wasn’t the magician nor was it Evan’s future plans. It was now time to deal with the real problem at hand.
“Is Ethan still not good with his highness?”
