In the southern part of the Great Yan Country is located a small country, the Yue Country.
Similarly to here, there were also other small countries that are not regarded as very rich or powerful. That was because the majority of those countries’ territory is covered by mountains or forests. Their soil is poor and not suitable for grazing or production. The citizen’s livelihood was mainly earned through hunting and selling silkworm.
However, despite its feeble economy the Great Yan Country is vast and rich in natural resources. Unfortunately, that made the Yue Country eye its territory greedily as if it were a treasure.Occasionally, they would cross the border to rob the country.
Usually, they would forcefully steal basic commodities and food. After all, their country had no means to support itself.
Compared to the other countries, the forces in the Northern region were swift and fierce. The soldiers had managed several times to keep the border secure. Whenever the Yue Country took action, they was like a child holding a branch and trying to tickle a person. Although, it was uncomfortable, it was also harmless. However, to this day, the Great Yan has had no means to strike back. Its land is mainly composed of mountains and forests which put its army in a disadvantageous position where they could get trapped. Additionally, there would be no guarantee of success.
There has been several episodes in the past to confirm this.
As soon as Zhu Feng heard about the Yue Country, his heart started to boil with rage.
“What is the current situation?”
Jian Ruocheng replied, After the enemy crossed the border, they burned down several fields, looted about 500,000 Liang of grains and killed or injured some of our citizens.”
(T/N:1 liang equal 0,05 kg)
The report had yet to be finished when the sharp sound of bones breaking was heard from Zhu Feng clenching his hands tightly.
Jian Ruocheng had never seen him this angry before so he decided not to talk for the time being.
Nan Yan thought of something and immediately retreated to one side; she wanted to give him a cup of tea to relieve his anger. Xiao Shunzi, who had been standing behind Zhu Feng from the beginning, also came to help.
The Emperor looked gloomy, he gazed at Nan Yan then coldly spoke, “No. His Highness does not want to drink tea.”
Nan Yan had barely touched the cup when she abruptly stopped her gesture.
Xiao Shunzi was shocked too as he looked between the Emperor and her. He wanted to say something, but in the end, he did not dare to open his mouth.
The Wu Ying Palace was engulfed in silence.
After a while, Zhu Feng only emotionlessly stated, “Yong Province is Jing Wang’s fief.”
Jian Ruocheng replied, “Yes.”
“Since Jing Wang wrote about the current situation, what else did he say
“Jing Wang also wrote about how the city is now damaged. He estimates that the reconstruction work would at least require 10,000,000 taels of silver. Furthermore, he is requesting horses and soldiers to help strengthen the defense of Yong Province.”
Zhu Feng angrily sneered.
“As a Prince, he is granted more than enough riches. Still, year after year, he still demands thousands and thousands of liangs of grain, taels of silver and horses. He also requires tea leaves, silk and even once asked for a private guard. Now, half of Yong Province has burned, yet he is still asking the Imperial Government for more resources.”
As he spoke, he turned to look at the ‘Big Yan Tong Treasure’ that had been placed on the side table and smile contemptuously.
“It would seem he already has a use for the new gold produced by His Highness.”
Nan Yan had been listening on the side. She slightly raised her eyebrows when she heard him.
In the past, she was just a female attendant serving as a palace maid that didn’t know much. Unexpectedly, the Imperial Government actually was burdened with so many things. The Imperial Government is like an oxcart filled with haystack that needs to be pushed, yet many are just freeloading.
Ye Zheng hurried over and softly spoke, “Your Highness, please calm down.”
Zhu Feng waved his hand dismissively. He seemed calm on the surface, but the veins bulging on each side of his forehead betrayed him. Without a doubt, he was enraged.
He suddenly asked, “Right Assistant Minister Jian, you have reported this matter. What are your thoughts?”
Jian Ruocheng pondered for a moment and finally said, “At first glance, it looks like Jiang Wang is at fault. However, this Minister is not willing to drive a wedge between brothers for mere speculations.”
