Chapter 39 - Silver or Gray
“She’s stable now,” said Gideon, the high priest, with a tired look on his face. Venio glanced at Laila who was lying in his bed and breathing the lightest of breaths. She looked especially tiny and frail in his large bed.
“What’s wrong with her?” Venio asked, seeming to be holding something in patiently.
At their master’s words, Thomas and Theodore, who were standing behind, gulped.
“I’m not quite sure since I’m not a doctor,” Gideon scratched his head and blinked as he answered.
“It’s just that as my divine power coursed through her body, I can sense that she’s in pain everywhere, especially here,” he said with his eyes half closed, pointing at her heart.
“She never said anything about her heart being in pain the entire time we were together.”
“Regardless, the problem is coming from here.”
Venio didn’t argue anymore but just frowned. It was frustrating to not understand what Gideon meant, but he was one of the few high priests and his words could be trusted.
He had been carrying the sleeping Laila and was just about to head towards the Grand Duke’s residence when her condition worsened all of a sudden. Venio couldn’t keep calm anymore when he looked at Laila, who was trying to swallow her whimpers even when she was unconscious.
He had run like a maniac from where they were all the way to the Grand Duke’s residence, all the while taking care not to hurt Laila from running so hard.
“So how about now? How is she now?”
“For now, the divine power is starting to react, but something is a little strange.”
Venio finally took his gaze off Laila and turned. The pressurizing gaze was now on Gideon, but Gideon only felt sleepy. Gideon gave a small yawn as he ran a hand through his wheat-colored hair, then said, “Sometimes, a soul that doesn’t belong to this world would appear, and divine power would not work on one who has such a soul.”
“A soul that doesn’t belong in this world? What do you mean?”
“The divine power is working for this lady, but how should I put… It just feels like…”
Venio’s nostrils flared with impatience. He was grinding his teeth when Gideon finally continued with half-opened eyes, “The soul that had belonged to this world went out briefly, then returned…”
“Gideon, what I want to know is how that affects her.”
It seemed he was saying if Gideon continued to talk about unnecessary things, Venio wouldn’t let Gideon be at peace. Gideon blinked slowly, gazed at Venio who was looking upset, and started nodding.
“Well, it seemed strange, as if she had left, but is back again. Anyway, since the divine power worked, there’s nothing to worry about for now.”
“That’s fine then. Gideon, standby in the room next to us, and Theodore, you should standby to call for a doctor around here. Actually, you should be sending for Rick to return. Thomas, where did Rick say he was going?”
“Saint Mann City, Master.”
“So, it might take about two weeks for him to return. Tell him I’m giving him five days instead.” Venio said himself that it would take two weeks for Rick to return, but announced that he was only going to give him five days. Now, poor Rick would have to come back running without being able to sleep.
‘Thank goodness I’m not a doctor.’ Theodore had a sympathetic look on his face as he watched on.
Thomas nodded politely, then glanced towards the bed with a curious look and left. The pale lady wasn’t like he had imagined.
Thomas was already prepared to accept any lady as his master’s wife as long as it was not Nevira Bedelium.
It was surprising to see the Grand Duke, who was always cold and sharp, look so concerned. The environment was now mysteriously warm, peaceful, and almost too soft. As Thomas left the room, his face was full of curiosity.
‘I’m pretty sure he will come back here after informing Rick. Tsk tsk, he should just go to sleep.’ Tomorrow, Thomas’s dark circles would be extended up to his neck. As Theodore watched on quietly, he started feeling sorry for his colleague, Thomas, who was snared by his curiosity.
After Thomas was gone, he asked Venio, “Your Excellency, is the lady…”
