Chapter 74: Ye Fan Was Confident In Winning (1)
The director rounded up Ye Fan, Tang Jin and the rest of the cast quickly to make an announcement addressing them directly.
The director had an acute sense of anticipation building up within him as he surveyed the contestant before him. His gaze swept over them all before reaching Ye Fan, pausing contemplatively for a moment as he informed them of the newest happening. “Now that the money’s gone from Ye Fan’s possession, the team will lend you some money. Keep in mind that this will only be a temporary measure. From now on, all of you must fend for yourselves and find a way to earn money.”
Everyone did not need to fake their shock this time, as panic bubbled within them, rising up to the surface uncontrollably, like the effervescence in freshly opened soda. A deep frown creased Gu Yachen’s pretty face, looking out of place from her usually gentle and pure image. “B-but we’re overseas right now! How are we going to earn money?” She screeched like a harpy, voice full of incredulity.
Ignoring her reaction, the director replied nonchalantly. “That’s not our problem. It’s something you’ll need to figure out on your own.”
Gu Yachen shot Ye Fan a scathing glare, feeling extremely resentful. After all, it was all Ye Fan’s fault in the first place! Why should the rest of them have to suffer?!? If not for her, then they wouldn’t have ended up in this predicament, they wouldn’t have needed to work their asses off and earn money.
The director continued on unaffected. “Since Ding Ruoyi is sick, she’ll be excluded from this mission. The four of you will choose your groups and then you’ll be split up into teams of two. These duos will cooperate and work together to earn money.”
He briefly paused for dramatic effect.” Obviously, whichever group makes more money within the specified time limit will be rewarded. The entire process will be broadcasted live, so everything you do will be seen by the audience.”
Gu Yachen immediately turned in Tang Jin’s direction, expectation glittering in her eyes like a child. In a split second she had made her decision as the choice had seemed very obvious to her. She was still a reasonably new actress within the industry, getting on a program like this hadn’t been a simple feat. She needed more exposure and to achieve her goal, she would milk this program for all it was worth. Of course, the audience could only focus on one group at a time, so she had to stick with a popular celebrity to get more camera time. After all, if she stood behind Tang Jin, she could share Tang Jin’s spotlight. Furthermore, she wasn’t good at many things, so she definitely had to rely on someone if she wanted to earn money. Tang Jin was not only young and famous, but also had her family’s backing to rely upon. Pigs would fly before Tang Jin didn’t earn money on this mission. She could already hear the clinking of cash and coins raining down upon her.
Flattered by being Gu Yachen’s first choice, Tang Jin preened, puffing her chest with pride before peering over at Ye Fan. She purposefully flipped her hair behind her as if showing off her popularity. Then Tang Jin, refocused her gaze on Gu Yachen and smiled benevolently. “Sure.”
No matter how much Tang Jin tried to poke the sleeping dragon that was Ye Fan’s temper, Ye Fan remained unperturbed and placid throughout. In Ye Fan’s eyes, Tang Jin’s childish schemes were painfully transparent no matter how much she believed them to be complicated, concealed and cryptic. She saw right through Tang Jin’s actions, unbothered. There was absolutely no need to spend an iota of energy on someone as spoiled and stupid as Tang Jin.
It seemed as if nobody wanted to work with Ye Fan. To everyone apart from the crew’s knowledge, Ye Fan had lost the money. This act of losing the money made her appear irresponsible and careless. At this very moment Li Qiong took the lead and approached Ye Fan, offering her a hand with a gentle smile painted across her face.”Ye Fan, let’s team up.””
Even though it seemed as if Ye Fan was the one who lost the money, Li Qiong didn’t think Ye Fan was actually that sort of person. From the beginning, Ye Fan had given her a good impression. The girl had a very mature and calm aura compared to Tang Jin and Gu Yachen. Li Qiong had enough experience in the entertainment world to know that all the glitters is not gold- the entertainment world was filled with illusions and nothing was exactly as it seemed.
And so, Ye Fan formed a team with Li Qiong, with Tang Jin and Gu Yachen in the other team. They had to earn money within a set time limit.
The sky was still tinted a light lavender as both Tang Jin and Gu Yachen headed out early. The clouds drifted above like dandelion fluff gently moving along in the breeze. Meanwhile, Ye Fan and Li Qiong still had yet to leave the villa rented by the program that served as their current accomodation. They lingered within the residence like the fragrance of incense burnt long ago, discussing their plan of action.
After musing over the matter all morning while getting ready for the day’s activities, Ye Fan had come to a conclusion. She finally brought the topic up with Li Qiong. “Miss Li Qiong, why don’t I go earn the money myself? You should stay here.”
Li Qiong stood stunned, unable to believe her ears. She raised her query to Ye Fan, her voicing gradually becoming higher pitched in her astonishment. “Wh? How did you come to this conclusion ?!”
“Ding Ruoyi said she was sick yesterday, and her health has only taken a turn for the worse. When I checked in on her today, she was as pallid as a lily’s petal. There was no rosiness left in her cheeks, I feel like someone needs to stay behind and take care of her.””
Ye Fan had thought over it multiple times, and knew it would be a thorn in her heart if she wasn’t reassured that someone was taking care of Ding Ruoyi. She wouldn’t be able to make money if she didn’t feel at ease with the situation. Also, she had already concocted a plan to earn money which she could do herself.
The cameras had started rolling as soon as they had woken alongside the sun. The soft, cotton candy pink sky created a peaceful atmosphere contrary to the harsh reality that thousands of eyes were on their every action the minute that the livestream began. The local netizens had all tuned into the live broadcast of “Let’s Holiday”. Back in the comfort of their homes, fingers began flying over keyboards, unleashing a barrage of comments that popped up on the screen.
“Why is Ye Fan pretending to be nice and considerate now? Where was this thoughtfulness yesterday when she said she’d take care of the money on everyone’s behalf and lost it ?!
“Alone in a foreign country without any help, it’s a difficult task…isn’t earning money on their own too much to ask ? It looks like Ye Fan is confident though. Well, we’ll see soon enough if she ends up falling on her face and making a fool of herself.”
”Be careful Ye Fan, don’t end up making any empty promises this time. If you waste all your time, you won’t end up making any money and Tang Jin’s team will definitely win. Then your reputation will really crumble into ashes.”
After viewing the clip dropped by the production team, Ye Fan’s reputation had taken a swan dive for the worse. The majority of the netizens now believed that Ye Fan was being confident with no basis. They wrongly perceived her determination as arrogance due to the skewed nature of the previous video. In their eyes, making money was no laughing matter after all. Most of them worked day and night for the salary they earned, to put a roof over their heads, take care of their families and save for their future. Believing that earning a substantial amount of money easily was simply whimsical and naive.
Li Qiong paused, her hesitation clearly visible as she frowned, wrinkles became deeper like the effect of a river with the passage of time, slowly eroding to form gaping canyons.
“Don’t worry, ease the frown from your face. If I can’t make any money, I’ll definitely come to you for help. I promise I won’t hesitate.” Ye Fan acquiesced to the older actress’s concern in a light tone. Although her tone was slightly teasing, she was still polite and pleasant. Ye Fan was mindful to not cross any lines with the respected older actress.
Li Qiong agreed, relieved that Ye Fan seemed open minded to that possibility and wouldn’t end up being too headstrong, insisting to do it all on her own and come to the residence with her hands empty. Li Qiong’s intuition tugged at her, something in her gut told her that Ye Fan would definitely end up making the money somehow.
As Ye Fan took her leave from the villa, she glanced back to glimpse an enthusiastically waving Li Qiong sending her off. It was a very wholesome scene, like any mother sending their child off to school or work, encouraging them to work hard and most importantly, try their best in everything they endeavoured to accomplish.
Meanwhile, Tang Jin and Gu Yachen had already left, walking side by side as they entered the city. “Tang Jin, have you thought about how to earn money?” On the way, Gu Yachen asked Tang Jin, cluelessness plastered across her face, the purest picture of innocence that could possibly exist..
Tang Jin responded, “Not yet. You?”
Gu Yachen said, “I’ve never been very decisive.”
Disdain rapidly flashed in Tang Jin’s heart as she gazed as Gu Yachen’s oblivious figure, far too lost in marvelling the sights and architecture to notice Tang Jin’s venomous glare.
Tang Jin shot Gu Yachen a saccharine smile as she slowly revealed the idea that she had chanced on. “Actually, I was thinking of singing on the streets.”
The other girl grinned at her sycophantically, smiling wider than before to show her appreciation for Tang Jin’s idea and lavish her with praise. However, Tang Jin couldn’t be bothered dealing with such pesky people. She had known that the crew would definitely arrange opportunities for her team to make money and had also agreed to help her. She could kick back and relax, they had it all covered and she didn’t need to lift a finger. After all, she was Tang Jin of all people.
