Chapter 68 - The Crown Prince’s Type
Pitch black hair and eyes that glittered like red jewels. The handsome man who possessed a perfectly symmetrical face was frowning at me. ‘I swear he could’ve been the main character if appearance was the only criteria…’
This man was my father’s disciple, so there was no doubt that he was a skillful swordsman and someone who my father approved of. He was the best person to act like my boyfriend in front of him. ‘It would be nice if he could cooperate with me without making a fuss…’
His eyes glittered with bloodlust. “Contractual relationship? What do you mean by that?”
‘Wow, it seems like he’s really angry. He was expressionless just a moment ago, so I must’ve really irritated him.’ I mulled over my words, thinking about what might have affected him so much, and quickly found the answer. ‘Right. Now that I think about it, I didn’t mention the benefits that will come with my offer.’ I heard that mercenaries were sensitive about the conditions concerning their jobs. If I offered something that he wasn’t satisfied with, he might refuse and immediately leave the mansion.
“In exchange for dating me, I’ll give you all the money you want.” His eyes became fiercer when I finished speaking, so I added another condition. “Of course, it will only be for a limited time, so you don’t need to worry. You just have to date me until I become independent and leave this place.”
He relaxed his expression and sighed. “Why are you trying to leave this place? Wouldn’t that be the start to a difficult life?”
In response to his simplistic thoughts, I smiled bitterly and said, “Remember when I told you that my father made a prospective marriage list for me?” When he nodded slowly, I snickered. “The problem is, my father already decided who I will be married to.”
“If you really dislike that person, can’t you just refuse him?”
“Well, he’s someone who I won’t be able to refuse even if I tried.”
He glared at me coldly. “Who is it that even you, the daughter of the duke, can’t refuse?” he asked in a low voice. It was the same tone he used when he asked me if anyone harassed me at the banquet. A burst of strange laughter bubbled from my lips.
‘Well, he probably thinks I’m not being smart in this situation.’ It was reasonable for me to become angry about my predicament like he was, but funnily enough, I wasn’t even upset anymore.
“Why are you laughing?” He looked at me with blatant disapproval, as if he thought I was laughing at him.
“Ah, I just… happened to laugh.”
When I evaded his question, he scrunched his face even more. “So, who is this person?”
I noticed this about him a while ago, but he was a really persistent person. ‘The point is that I’m about to be forced into an arranged marriage. The identity of that person isn’t important.’ But given his tenacious personality, he would probably be in a bad mood if I evaded his question. I had no choice but to answer him.
“Hey, you can’t tell this to anyone else. If they find out, I’ll be in big trouble.”
“What type of person do you think I am? Just tell me already.”
I hesitated for a while. “Maximillian Casein Assiette,” I finally said.
“A trivial person like that… What?”
“The crown prince of this empire.”
He looked at me with surprise. “The crown prince is your prospective marriage partner?”
“That’s what I just said.”
He became silent for a while, then said in a quiet voice, “That’s weird, there’s no way…”
There was doubt in his hesitant voice. ‘Well, he’s someone who once insisted on speaking to me informally, so he’s probably not very knowledgeable about worldly affairs.’ I decided to be generous and explain the situation to this insensible man.
“What do you mean, ‘weird?’ Despite my unruly appearance, I’m still the daughter of a duke. In terms of status, my family is only second to the imperial family. Although my social reputation is a mess, it won’t be a loss for the crown prince and his family to have the duke as a relative.”
When I finished giving this long explanation, he chuckled and said, “That’s true.”
I wondered if he actually understood me, but I continued to explain for now. “That’s why I won’t be able to refuse the crown prince as my prospective marriage partner.”
A long time ago, a great archmage by the name of Assiette established the Assiette empire. It is said that as a great lord and king, he used magic to solve his people’s problems. As such, Assiette’s descendants were revered as gods. Perhaps this was the reason why my father’s disciple possessed an extremely stiff expression.
“For this reason, I’m planning to show my father that I’m dating someone else before he even brings up the crown prince. He will be unable to force this union if his daughter is involved in a scandal with another man.”
At that moment, my father’s disciple parted his lips. “What are you planning to do if the crown prince says he doesn’t mind?”
Goosebumps rose on my skin as soon as I heard his dreadful supposition, but I tried my best to not show my fear. “That’s impossible. The imperial family must be crazy if they approve of a woman who’s already dating someone else…”
I trailed off because I was bothered by his change in expression. ‘What’s wrong with him?’ He had frowned at the word ‘crazy.’
At that moment, he said, “You might suit the crown prince’s taste.”
‘I might suit the crown prince’s taste?’ A shiver ran up my spine in response. ‘I knew it. It was unusual that he deliberately came down to the Room of Shadows to torture me in the first place.’ If I was really the crown prince’s type, it would be difficult to escape from him because madmen obtained joy out of killing and harassing other people for no reason. I shuddered from these horrible thoughts and quickly calmed myself.
“Then I must run away,” I said.
As soon as I said that, his expression froze over.
