Chapter 8.3: 13
She clicked her remote and the image changed once more, this time to a chart containing numbers and letters.
“Second, all of you have been awarded a point value based on your rank.” She pointed at the table displayed on the screen. “All of you have a set value of points at the start. Points are earned by defeating other people and removing their collars. As I said earlier, If your collar is removed, you will be eliminated. Afterward, you will be teleported into the medical bay by me and receive treatment. Of course, you will be able to watch the rest of the battles on the screen. If too many groups are still alive, or too many are eliminated, we will be deciding who gets in through points accumulated. As the observers, we hold complete control over the decisions made. The lethality of spells used will be left to your judgment. However, anything causing instant death is prohibited. If you break this rule, you’ll be disqualified immediately.”
250 people roughly counting, that means there are 62 to 63 groups. Elimination will be hard, that means keeping our points should be our priority. Akira glanced at the screen. As his eyes scanned the values from left to right, his heart jumped and he drew in a sharp breath.
“What’s wrong?” Hearing his sharp breath, Akane and the twins glanced towards him before following his eyesight towards the screens.
“E-ranks 10 points, D-ranks 15, C-ranks 20, B-ranks 25, A-ranks 30, S-rank…” Looking over it, Akane continued to read aloud before reaching the end. As her eyes wandered over the last value, she started gaping.
Hearing her words, the twins whipped their faces towards the end of the screens. Indeed, underneath the S-rank column, there was the number 300 in a big, glossy font.
While his companions were gaping at the difference that was like heaven and Earth, Akira felt beads of sweat forming on his head as he felt five times the number of stares his group had been getting beforehand.
“I heard the S-ranker had that condition…”
“If we take them down…”
“Our ticket in. Found it. If we work together with others…”
For some reason, the content of the murmurs had seemed to change.
“Well as you can see, that’s all! Now, without further ado, we’ll begin the exam! All of you will be back in about 5 hours. Good luck! Oh yeah, some of you might black out, but that’s your problem!”
Akira swiveled his neck towards her, his mind a complete mess from panic. On her hand was a black Speculo pulsing with purple lights. It took on the form of a fingerless glove. However, it seemed too delicate to be used as a weapon. Raising her hand, she snapped her fingers while wearing a devilish grin. Instantly, dark whirlpools of magic appeared above the heads of the students and started to pull them upwards.
“Wait, already? Give us time to-” One boy had attempted to protest, however, he had been cut short by his disappearance through the portal.
Similar scenes appeared throughout the room as yelping people were plucked like weeds. As Akira was sucked up by the vortex, the last thing he saw was the greedy eyes of the other groups, taking one last look at their prey as they all disappeared. Going through the portal, he felt something enclose his neck while the devilish laughter of a certain woman filled his ears. Tano Yuri had gained several aliases while she had been active. Hearing the chilling voice, Akira had one last thought before his mind faded into nothingness.
… Yes, that’s a much better name for this person…
And just like that, The 13th Demon of the SMC made 250 people vanish into thin air.
