Chapter 14.2: Spectators
Around the group of four, a tall barrier of earth sprang up.
“They entrap their enemy. And then, they do this.”
As the group fell into a panic, the stone spheres from before appeared on the ground.
“It seems the gauntlet-wielder placed a spell that just pushes the spheres above ground. Then, the S-ranker or the A-ranker shoots a flame spell at one of them, causing a chain reaction.”
Just as she prophesied, the gauntlet-wielding boy used the opening caused by the group’s confusion to produce a flame and hurl it at one of the spheres. All of a sudden, the whole monitor turned white. The camera soon filtered the light, but Kei had experienced it firsthand and knew how bright it was. It had felt like opening his eyes next to a star. In a predictable manner, the group stumbled a bit as they lost their vision.
“You saw the fast guy earlier, right? The wild-looking one?” the girl said as she stopped tugging her hair, only to start biting her nails with an extreme ferocity.
Watching her, Kei felt the urge to tell her off by saying “That’s your body, so take better care of it!” but he refrained as he wanted a full explanation.
“Watch the screen. Oh, you should probably move away from there.”
Since Kei snapped his head towards her, he almost missed what happened on the screen but for his peripheral vision. The wild boy ran at the group and snatched their collars. He was gone in a flash. A vortex appeared above the blinded four, and as they were sucked in…
Kei heard a familiar sound above his head. On instinct, he and his teammates jumped away from their spot, and the group they’d been watching appeared on the ground, groaning in a familiar manner.
“So yeah, that’s how they do it.” The girl sighed again and let her body go limp, as if she’d given up on life. “Those stone spheres are likely an original spell that red-haired girl made. The first group that they fought was eliminated, and we heard from them about it.”
In his disbelief, Kei switched his gaze from the screen, to the group, to the girl. After a minute, he sat down in such a lifeless manner, that it seemed like his soul was hanging out of his mouth.
“What the hell…”
“We feel you. But we aren’t the unluckiest ones, you know?” consoled the girl. She nodded in the direction of another person.
Glancing over, Kei saw a girl lying on the floor like a corpse. In fact, he really thought she was dead until she twitched a little.
“That girl over there? She had to fight one on one with that… red-haired devil on the screen. Apparently, the flashbang wasn’t the only original spell she had to deal with.”
“…What did she go through?”
“We don’t know, can’t understand her. We only managed to get info about the flashbang out of her.”
In horror, Kei stared at the girl, and then he looked back at the screen. Once more, Akane skipped over to the wild-looking boy. She had a look of innocent happiness on her face, similar to a little child who had gotten a present, but it caused chills to run down his body. Almost everyone in the room seemed to share his sentiments, and they were united in their thoughts for one fleeting moment.
‘The devil… It’s the devil itself!’
“Hmm? Akane, are you feeling sick?”
“Huh? No, I just felt like someone was talking about me… Whatever! Let’s reset the trap!~”
“Ugh, I feel bad for Fujita-san…”
