Chapter 12.1: First Battle – Akane
So how was Akane faring?
“No more…” Although the plea was just a whisper, it was carried far by the wind, unobstructed by any tree. Well, that was due to the fact that there were no longer any trees in the area.
When they had begun, there had been trees all around them. But what remained now was Akane standing in a huge clearing peppered with craters of varying sizes. As one of the few trees still standing burned and fell to the ground behind Akane, the whisper was heard once more.
“Tired already? You were the one who ambushed us, you know~ Ufufufufufu!” The demoness of the Nishiyama family let out the laugh she had inherited from her mother, all the while preparing another attack. “You should prepare for the consequences~”
“I GIVE UP! HAVE MERCY!”
The female B-ranker recalled her Speculo and bent down onto the ground and prostrated. Seeing this, the demoness’s sadistic expression intensified as the grin on her face widened. Her chin got a little bit higher as she looked down on her opponent.
“Hmm? Is that so~”
“Ehem.” A familiar voice came from behind Akane, saving the B-ranker from experiencing hell.
Akane froze. Looking back, she saw someone appear from behind one of the burning trees. As expected, it was her brother Akira, staring at her with dead eyes. It was a surreal scene. A girl was holding a wand with a rather ominous spell prepared. At her feet, a crying girl was prostrating, and behind her stood a beat-up boy, looking at her as if she was completely hopeless. All three of them were standing in an area that could be described as hell, a warzone, or a movie set created by a certain director whose name had become synonymous with the word ‘explosion’.
With the exception of the broken girl and the crackling sounds of the burning trees, an awkward silence hung over the area.
“… Hey. Onii-chan! That collar in your hands? It seems you won! I’m so glad!”
“Don’t act so casually!” In just a moment, he appeared right in front of her and brought his fist down onto her head. Wincing, Akane only now released the spell she had been holding onto. She recalled Seventeen and freed her hands before rubbing the top of her head.
“So maaaaybe I went a bit crazy with my new spells- gufuh!” Akane protested, only to receive another hit to the head, which forced her to fall into a seiza.
“You went too far!” Akira was roaring. “How did this even happen?! Don’t you know how much attention you’re going to attract this way?”
“Well…” With her eyes darting all over the place, Akane recounted what had transpired.
“… Why are we starting in the middle, and why is there already screaming?” Akira’s deadpan look had returned.
“… Is this the start?”
Akane avoided his eyes.
“AHHHHHHHH!” The B-ranker was sent flying as soon as the battle started. Akane and her poor victim were the only ones left in the area as their teammates had all scattered during their respective battles. As soon as the B-ranker had taken a step backward, the ground had exploded and sent her flying.
“Ok! Test number one, success~” In an almost comical manner, Akane was keenly observing the explosion as if it was a project for a science experiment.
Magichemical Series, Experimental Spell 1: Landmine.
Thanks to her new ability that boosted her Aether production, Akane had come up with a new line of spells that she had dubbed the “Magichemical Series”. Aether would transform into various chemicals. Then, summoning the primary elements was easy. Magic and science combined. This particular spell used the chemical reaction of cesium added to water.
“Did you know? When cesium is mixed with water, it creates a violent explosion!”
While waiting for her brother to wake up, Akane had set up several of these landmines. Although it was possible to create them to be set off by contact, Akane had chosen another detonation method to protect her unwary teammates. She had created a thin wind barrier between the cesium and water, ensuring the landmine did not go off prematurely. Thanks to the capabilities of Seventeen, Akane had no issues maintaining the barrier. And then all she had done was wait for the B-ranker to step near one of these.
“Ok! Today’s passive spell test has gone well, so how about an active spell?” As she grinned, she held Seventeen in her right hand and formed a small rock sphere in her left hand. Just as she finished preparing it, the B-ranker landed on the ground.
“You… You’ll pay for that.” Getting up while threatening Akane as such, she flipped opened her book-form Speculo. And just as she did, fifty firebolts appeared in the air. Akane had been preparing to launch her spell, however, she stopped due to her curiosity.
“Oh? It’s impossible for even me to form that many simultaneously. Can your Speculo hold spells?” Akane saw the B-ranker bite her lip.
“To figure it out immediately… Well, I guess there’s no point hiding it.”-she summoned more firebolts-“Yes, I can load spells into the pages and summon them later. They don’t disappear even if I recall my Speculo, so I’ve been stockpiling spells for the past few months.”
“Impressive~ Well, either way, I’ll be taking your collar.” Akane threw the ball before she could be shot at.
Hmph. What does she think that can do to me? Sneering at Akane in her mind, the B-ranker directed one of the firebolts and destroyed the ball.
