Chapter 11.1: First Battle – Twins
If Shun had to describe his mood, he would do it with one word: pissed.
“Two seconds after findin’ out the S-rank is useless, I get ambushed? IS THIS A FUCKIN’ JOKE!?” roaring angrily, Shun evaded an attack from the B-ranker who had swung his hammer at the earth, creating a shockwave of sorts.
“Calm down.” On the other hand, Hiroshi was keeping a level head. Where the C-ranker’s sword ended, began a blade of mana many feet long. However, during multiple exchanges, Hiroshi would just dissipate it with his ability before it could cut him. “Focus on the battle.”
“I am, I am!” While replying to his brother, Shun also sent blades of wind flying towards the hammer-wielding B-ranker. However, with a single swing of his massive warhammer the blades of wind were stopped. Once more, the silent giant raised his hammer, preparing to swing downwards.
“Oh for the love of- GAH!” Shun kicked off the ground in order to evade the shockwave, but he was late in his timing and ended up taking a hit to his leg. Stumbling forwards, he straightened himself with a grunt. The warhammer’s shockwave packed quite a punch, which he had felt even through his armor. While he was waiting for the numbness of his leg to subside, the hammer-wielder quickly readied himself once more.
Shit! Shun attempted to evade, but his body didn’t listen. As a shockwave once more hurtled towards him, Shun suddenly lost sight of everything in front of him; the world had gone black.
“Thank me later.”
Looking to his right, he saw his twin standing with his arms outstretched. As Hiroshi had mentioned earlier, Yin also had the ability to create an area that deleted everything it contacted. Thus, he had used it to create a barrier of sorts to block the hammer’s onslaught. But it caused the space itself to be deleted as well, leaving the area this “delete-wall” occupied pitch black. Feeling irritated by how he had to be saved, Shun grumbled.
“Well, I’ll be damned. This blows,” he complained, feeling jolts of pain run up his leg with every stretch of it. “Well then, robot brother, what’re we gonna do?”
“Don’t call me a robot!” Hiroshi replied in a sharp voice. “Well, as for what to do-”
“Your top is open!”
Before they could convene, the C-ranker dropped down onto them with his sword raised. Shun grabbed Hiroshi and yanked him out of the way as the blade of mana missed them by mere inches. But the C-ranker made an elegant landing and dashed towards them post-haste.
“Have a taste of this!” As he ran, the C-ranker extended the mana blade into a pointed cone shape with the short handle sticking out the end. Bringing back his elbow, he then thrust it towards Hiroshi.
“That’s a lance, isn’t it!” Retorting so, Hiroshi detached himself from Shun and put his hands in front of himself again, gripping the blade and shattering it. However, just as he thought he was safe, a smaller blade extended out of the broken fragments and struck him in his left shoulder.
“Ah!” Crying out in pain, Hiroshi leaped backward while holding onto his shoulder, the arm now unable to move.
“Got you!” the C-ranker yelled with glee, gripping his sword with both hands. Just in time, Shun arrived and held Hiroshi under his arm as they got away from the C-ranker.
“Can’t ya do more?”
“I wish I could, but using lethal force is prohibited! What do you think will happen if they trip into my ability?” Hiroshi reasoned with Shun. “Even if I’m an A-ranker, I can’t do much with conditions like these!”
“Then what the hell do we do?!” Pausing to avoid another shockwave from the B-ranker, Shun changed directions.
“I need to think! Just… avoid their attacks and carry me for a bit!”
“Great, think quicker!”
Leaving his fate in his brother’s arms quite literally, Hiroshi drowned out the noise of the battle and entered a deep state of thought.
How can we end this fight in a short time? My left arm’s useless, and Shun can’t run forever. The hammer wielder is a big problem. Because he is keeping Shun at bay, we can’t fight the swordsman together. Tano Yuri said that if we could either knock them out or steal their collars, they would be removed from the fight. But even with Shun’s speed, we can’t take the hammer wielder’s collar because of the massive range of his attacks; we can’t take the swordsman’s collar either because then the hammer wielder would interrupt us!
