Chapter 5.2: Testing
For half an hour, Akane demonstrated her wide repository of spells by sending blades of air, icicles, boulders, and several other attacks flying at her father. Even as she continuously fired spells at him, she did not run out of mana as her Speculo had increased her recovery speed. However, after going through all the spells she knew, she stumbled a bit.
“Ugh.” She groaned while panting. Wiping the sweat off her brows, she sat down on the ground. “The side effect is pretty harsh, huh.”
“Well, that can’t be helped,” Allowing Asclepius to dematerialize, Gou gave her a water bottle. “While Seventeen lets you constantly recover mana, it saps your stamina so you feel more fatigued. Now that you’ve done everything, why don’t you take a break-”
“Wait a second, Tou-san!” She cut him off in an angry voice while jumping up. “I haven’t tested how it works with Aether Element yet!”
“Tch…” Gou and Akira clicked their tongues silently. She remembered after all.
“I thought I heard something just now?” Akane’s lips were curving upwards but her eyes told a different story. Seeing this, the two men of the Nishiyama family vehemently shook their heads.
“You’re imagining things. Now, go ahead.” As he said this, Gou mentally whispered a prayer. Please don’t let the house be destroyed.
Calling on both Darkness and Light, Akane channeled her mana into Seventeen. Once again receiving the feeling of being doused in energy, she started to combine the two. To her immense surprise, Seventeen produced a greater amount of Aether than she had ever seen before. Usually, she could only produce two cubic centimeters, but now, at the tip of her wand, was an opalescent, white mass about 20 centimeters in diameter. An increase of more than 600x!!
“Amazing.” Forgetting his worries, Gou looked with wonder at the impossible sight which was unfolding before his eyes. He never dreamt that one day, he would be able to see such a big mass of Aether outside of a laboratory. However, Akane’s next words caused a chill to go down his spine.
“Great, with this amount I can test something I’ve been wanting to try for years!” In an upbeat tone, Akane hummed.
“Um, Akane… could you perhaps tell Tou-san what you’re thinking of doing or…?”
“It’s a surprise! So please stand still.” Grinning like a devil, Akane denied her father an explanation.
Seeing his daughter gathering magic power in her Speculo, Gou blanched. Akane was an intelligent girl, so much so that she was regarded as a prodigy and was allowed to synthesize two years earlier. Due to her intelligence, she would occasionally get eccentric ideas that usually ended up either failing terribly or working too well. And even then, that was before she got a Speculo. If she tried something now with an MA Speculo that boosted her Aether Element…
Quickly, he turned towards the direction of the house where Akira had been standing; only to find him waving from the doorway with a smile that seemed to say “Otou-san… I’ll visit your grave later, good luck~”. Feeling betrayed by his son, Gou turned to Akane and attempted to negotiate while materializing Asclepius and using every A-rank protection spell he knew.
“Akane, it might be better to test on an inorganic object right?”
“Tou-san, we destroyed anything sticking out of the ground in our property when I tried making a new technique last time. But you probably won’t die from this so it’s best to test it on you!”
“Here I come!”
Ignoring her father’s desperate pleas, Akane sent the magic flying at her father while wearing a grin on her face. As Akira stepped into the house, he serenely closed the door behind him. Walking up to the kitchen, he poured himself a cup of tea and sipped it quietly while listening to the sound of his father’s scream which was soon accompanied by a loud explosion, causing the house to shake. I’ll go back outside in 5 minutes. Oh, is that Endo-san ringing the doorbell? That was quick of him, I better explain what’s going on.
After clarifying the situation to his next-door neighbor, Endo-san laughed, going, “It’s Akane again? Should’ve guessed. Give Gou my regards if he’s still alive!”
Akira returned to the backyard, only to fall face first into a crater. What? Coughing out the dust that had gotten into his mouth, Akira stood up and looked at the surroundings.
“… What happened here?”
Within 5 minutes, the backyard that was once covered with luscious, green grass had been turned into a crater 30 meters wide, resembling a volcanic plain. There were still smoldering flames burning on the ground. In the center of the crater was his father, lying face up with his clothes slightly charred. Crouching beside him was Akane. While he wordlessly stared at the destruction, a thought occurred to Akira.
… I only heard one explosion.
“Ah, you’re back.” They simultaneously greeted him in a cheerful and monotone voice. Who had used which was obvious.
Without even asking what had happened, he kept on quietly staring as if he was trying to drill a hole through his family with his vision alone.
“Let’s fix everything up and get to testing Onii-chan’s, Tou-san!”
“… Yes. But your Tou-san is feeling worn out right now so please do it yourself.” As he said that, he turned his head upwards and lay there.
Laughing awkwardly, Akane stood up and started reforming the land once again. As she filled in the crater, Akira continued to stare at her and the destruction she stood in. If she had gotten an S-rank…
