Chapter 4.1: Analysis
“Akira, Akane, I’ve got good news.”
Called by his father, Akira snapped back to reality. The brother and sister pair glanced at their father, curious.
“We’ve got an email from the SMC. It seems like the analysis results are out,” Gou said with his usual composed smile, although the quick tapping of his foot betrayed his atmosphere. In response, Akane set her fork on her plate and Akira jumped up as they rushed over to their father’s side and stared intently at the tablet he was holding.
Even though they had received their Speculo, Akane and Akira still had no clue about their capabilities. So they had not been able to use them at home as it would be dangerous to do so with not even a clue about what their Speculo could do. But now, with the analysis from the SMC, they could finally test out their new abilities.
“First, here’s Akane’s.” As he said that, Gou tapped on one of the new emails he had received and revealed a chart reminiscent of a role-playing game.

Data reveals the possibility that an ability related to Ether Element exists.
“Ether Element, that’s perfect!” After reading the last line, Akira’s eyes began to sparkle.
Magic had 6 primary elements: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Light, and Darkness. With these 6, it was possible to create Compound Elements such as Lightning from Air and Fire. Of all possible combinations, Light and Darkness were special.
Magicologists hypothesized that Mana could take infinite forms whether it be through Compound Elements or Derivative Elements, but what they knew for sure was that there existed an intermediate element, the Ether element that could be gained by combining Light and Darkness as equals.
In the early days, a laboratory with great funding attempted to produce and use the Ether Element. Fifty magicians combined could only create a cubic centimeter of it. And after producing it, they failed to use it as Ether Element required a clear image of what it would be changed to. But the magicians all had a different image or understanding of the material they had been aiming to create.
However, times had changed since then. The newer generations of magicians were born from parents who had used magic, unlike those fifty magicians who were born in a world initially without magic. As the new generations were born from parents who had actually used magic at least once in their life, it resulted in them receiving better quantity, relays, and control.
And Akane was a prodigy still. Measuring her amount of mana, it would be the equivalent of a hundred old era magicians. And as a lover of chemistry, when she was taught about the Ether element in school she immediately went home to experiment. But even with her mind-boggling amount of mana, Akane was only able to produce 2 cubic centimeters of Ether Element when testing it out.
And this was where the scales tipped in her favor: Akane was an individual. She didn’t have the taxing requirements of multiple magicians working as one and as an individual, the image created was a clear one compared to the muddy mix made by the magicians who worked together in the past. Not to mention, the actual fusion of Light and Darkness was straightforward. It was almost laughable how a teenager who barely knew any spells was able to experiment daily with one of the most difficult to use Elements in the world.
“If I can use the Ether Element better… I could do even more interesting experiments, ufufufufufu.” Akane spoke like a child waiting to open a gift on Christmas morning. But despite her innocent smile, Gou and Akira slightly shuddered. More experiments? Dear god… the repair bills for our backyard…
