Chapter 3.2: Family Celebration
“We’re home!” The Nishiyama siblings had arrived at their house.
Akane had gotten much calmer, but her eyes still had hints of red remaining. As they were taking off their shoes, hurried footsteps could be heard. Holding a ladle dripping soup and wearing an apron, their mother came rushing out of the kitchen.
“You two, how’d it go?”
She eagerly looked at each of them in turn, her anticipation evident in her eyes. Akane and Akira faced each other, then looked back at their mother.
“We’ll tell you when Tou-san arrives, but it went well!”
“I see… I’m glad to hear that. Sit down, dinner’s nearly ready! I made your favorites~!”
If it was only Akane’s result that had been good, she would have restrained her excitement in consideration of her brother. But as she was virtually glowing, Haruna was sure Akira’s result must have been fine as well.
Wearing a bright, relieved smile, Haruna suppressed her curiosity as she briskly turned around and led her son and daughter to the dining room where they had a light conversation for a while. Half an hour later they heard the front door open with a slow clack.
“What happened to you?” Their voices rang out as one.
Under his eyes were bags, and his back was hunched as if his spine was permanently stuck in a curved position. With the aura of a corporate slave, he walked over to the living area and lifelessly dropped his briefcase onto the coffee table while letting his custom-made coat gradually slide off his broad shoulders and onto the sofa, which creaked from his weight.
“Work was a bit… tiresome today.”
Nishiyama Gou was, despite his athletic build, a doctor. Using his healing type Speculo’s ability in tandem with his medical knowledge, Nishiyama Gou had saved many lives and his reputation had skyrocketed. As he was the undisputed best doctor in all of Japan, he worked at the national hospital. Due to this, he had witnessed several extreme incidents when Speculos had first been introduced to an unprepared society. However in recent times where Speculos were managed through strict laws…
“I had to deal with a couple who had a fight,” Gou told his daughter with a strained look, wincing as if the mere memory of it caused him great pain.
“That doesn’t sound too-”
“They were C-rank Maestros with fighting type Speculos.”
“Ah.” His family members let out a sound of understanding.
These days there were many cases where people would have an argument, which would then escalate from words into violence, and escalate further into a duel. A duel between Maestros would almost always lead to major injuries, and even if that wasn’t the case there would still be several damages: mental, physical, and oftentimes infrastructural.
Haruna swiftly brought out a pitcher and served her haggard husband some iced tea. Gou loved beer, however, he would not touch it on weekdays as there would occasionally be days where he was called in order to address an emergency. After downing a glass full, he sighed and sank into his chair.
“Haaaa. Not only did I have to use a ton of magic, but I also had to listen to them bicker for about 3 hours. I can finish other procedures quickly, but several bone fractures throughout the whole body are time consuming. I’m still trying to figure out how in the world they managed to do that to each other. Both of them had C-rank enhancement types that let them stay awake the whole time as well…”
“Tou-san… are you sure it isn’t time to retire?” Akane lightly gave a suggestion to her father.
“Dear, you’ll be 44 next year and you’ve raised enough money for us to live well without working. Perhaps it’s time,” Haruna chipped in. “After all, these days such incidents are less severe and non-Speculo treatments are getting better.”
“One day perhaps, but for now, I’ll keep doing it until I can’t use mana.” As Gou firmly replied to his children, they could only smile wryly at their father.
Nishiyama Gou had always been a gentle soul. A very satisfied look could be seen on his face whenever he would help someone, which only appeared more often after he decided to work as a doctor. Originally planning to donate his Concept Core when he reached 16, he had decided to synthesize on a whim. It was the greatest choice he had ever made. The Speculo he received was a healing type, and a B-rank at that. Needless to say, he had been elated that his Speculo would be able to support his dream. Combined with his extensive medical knowledge, he shot up the ranks of medical professionals, until he arrived at the very top.
“Now enough about me.” A glimmer could be seen from his worn out face. “How did the ceremony go? Looking at the both of you, it looks like it turned out well for everyone.”
“Yes, you said you’d tell us when your father returned. So, how did it go?”
Gou gulped down the remaining contents of his cup and turned to his children with curiosity evident in his eyes. Next to him was Haruna who had rushed out of the kitchen after leaving the soup to boil. Observing this, Akira’s lips raised.
“Akane got an A-rank Speculo, and it’s even of the MA variety.”
“Ooo!” The Nishiyama couple widened their eyes in appreciation as they started clapping. Gou straightened his back and looked rejuvenated.
“As expected of my genius daughter!”
“As expected of our house’s prodigy!”
“Mou~ Tou-san, Kaa-san stop that~ Hey! Don’t laugh at me!” Akane said shyly as her face reddened. Seeing this, her family started laughing.
“And you, Akira?” Haruna looked to her son, inquiring curiously.
“Yes, you seem rather happy today. How did it go?” Gou placed his big hand on Akira’s shoulder, covering it entirely. Akira’s smile widened in anticipation.
“Well Otou-san, Okaa-san…”
