Chapter 17 - You Are Too Flawed
That sly request of his not only meant that he wanted to see her face again, but also that he selfishly wanted to try and sleep with her one more time before he got married.
Sun Ha simply couldn’t understand how shameless he could be. He was marrying her classmate! Even if he only wanted to see her face, that would be unbelievably brazen, but she could have truly gone without hearing his insulting request to sleep with her before he got married.
It wasn’t just enough to hang up on him. She blocked Kyung Min’s new number too and started walking again, but something at the back of her mind bothered her.
It wasn’t like she hadn’t forgotten about him, after all. It was still hard to keep her composure as the memories of how he hurt her surfaced.
She’d become close to Kyung Min after she entered her third year of college. He was four years older than her and, though he was very forward, he didn’t make her feel too pressured. The distance between them gradually shrank as her feelings towards him grew. Eventually, it was natural for them to become lovers.
Though now she saw it as a lie that she’d fallen for, he had seemed kind and understanding when they were together. Kyung Min was from a rich family, so he had trouble empathizing with her difficulties. However, he never ignored her and seemed to completely respect her.
For the first time, Sun Ha thought she could trust someone who wasn’t family. Or rather, she deluded herself that she could.
At least until Kyung Min’s mother came to the campus and caused a scene.
Sun Ha was on her way out of a lecture room after class when she suddenly came face-to-face with a middle-aged woman who was wearing a venomous expression. At first, Sun Ha didn’t know what was going on.
“You’re Yu Sun Ha? How dare a lowly girl like you seduce my boy without knowing your place!” the woman spat.
The words sounded like something ripped straight from an over-the-top drama, and Sun Ha’s mind went blank.
Sun Ha’s classmates were piling at the door, watching the unfolding scene with obvious surprise.
The angry woman continued her tirade, “I heard that your father was a criminal and your mother was deaf and mentally ill! The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! You live in some ghetto because you have no money, but you’re trying to seduce my Kyung Min into marriage? This is why children born from feeble-minded parents are frightening! They don’t know their place!”
“What are you talking about—” Sun Ha tried to speak, but the woman cut her off.
“I heard your mother’s deafness was genetic, too! What if you had a child with my son and they ended up deaf? It’s frightening that you’re so selfish! I could perhaps get past that, since being deaf isn’t a sin. You could apologize to your mother, but what about your father? He went to jail! A child of a criminal will obviously learn to act like them! You probably learned how to steal and harass people from your father!
“Do you know how much effort I put into raising my son, just to see him run off and marry someone like you?!” Her voice got louder with every word she spoke until she was shouting her complaints.
Sun Ha’s face went pale with shock. Behind her, the whispering of the crowd got louder.
Sun Ha could swear on her life that she had never dreamed of getting married to Kyung Min nor trying to seduce him for his money. However, something nagged at her.
During the year they’d been dating, Kyung Min had never been satisfied with just light skinship, and he’d persistently tried to get her to sleep with him. Every time they met up, he’d try to get her in bed with him, but Sun Ha would always decline. Though she did like him and it made her feel bad to keep rejecting him, she didn’t want to take things further. She just didn’t have good enough reasons to sleep with him.
Eventually, though, Sun Ha ended up telling him why she kept rejecting him since he felt so ashamed when she did. It wasn’t that he wasn’t attractive enough or that she didn’t like him enough. She also didn’t have some sort of strong belief against premarital sex. It was just that, ever since she was young, Sun Ha had always dreamed of only sleeping with her one true love after they got married. Doing that was her own stubborn wish.
Even though Kyung Min had known she was quite reserved about sex, he hadn’t been able to hide his surprise from her confession.
Sun Ha knew that there was a possibility that they might immediately break up due to this, but she had often felt that going out with Kyung Min was a burden. It wasn’t as if she had begun dating him like it was a fling, but she had never considered marrying him.
Sun Ha was only twenty-two then, and her future was still bleak. She had always dreamed of meeting the right person and creating a harmonious family together, but she had always thought she would need a job and a stable life for that. It was impossible to consider when she was unemployed and still in college.
Even ignoring the fact that she was in no position to get married, she thought it was foolish to try and push for a marriage between two young people who didn’t even have any solid foundation.
Kyung Min, on the other hand, had a completely unexpected reaction to her explanation. “Should we get married? No, let’s get married.”
“W-What are you saying suddenly?” Sun Ha sputtered.
“Let’s get married as soon as I graduate, in spring next year.”
“You’re joking, right?”
“You think I’m joking right now?” Kyung Min asked, obviously offended. “I was serious about you the moment I met you. I had already thought about our relationship all the way up to marriage. Now I’m just moving up the timeline a bit. You know how wealthy my family is, right? You won’t need to worry about finances.”
Sun Ha was taken aback by his childish reaction, and the idea that he had to be joking lingered in the back of her mind. It was obvious he had completely fallen for her, but Sun Ha didn’t think he’d be so empty-headed that he would marry her just so he could sleep with her. Marriage wasn’t child’s play.
But then Kyung Min caused an incident. He announced to everyone in his household that he would marry her after he graduated, blabbering the whole time about every detail of her background and hardships.
