Chapter 2 - The Omega Was Found, but…
The message that Seokchan conveyed to Manager Moon went straight to all of the staff at Hodie. Thanks to that, the person was found after only half a day.
“You found him?”
When Seokchan called, Heerak was just entering the HW head office after being summoned by his father. The call came when he was right in front of the chairman’s office, so he took a step back. He did not think that this was a conversation that he should be having in his father’s face. And that was a good judgment call.
“That’s good. It was an employee after all?”
“That is correct.”
Heerak frowned, creating a furrow on his forehead.
“Tsk. I can’t believe I laid my hands on an employee. I should quit drinking.”
“I agree that that is also a problem.”
“Are you implying there’s another issue?”
“Yes,” Seokchan mumbled in a vague tone.
“I personally do not believe this is a big issue… No, rather, I think this may be for the best. But you might think differently, Executive Director.”
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’
Heerak could not understand his secretary. But he didn’t think that he would be able to come up with the answer by dwelling on it, so he did as Seokchan suggested and headed to Hodie.
Not long after, Heerak could come face to face with the omega in question. They were the only two people left in Hodie’s office.
Ten minutes passed since he arrived, but Heerak could not say a word. The first and last thing he said was “you can sit comfortably” to the man who stood up from his seat when Heerak entered.
He gawked at the “omega” who was sitting up straight on the couch. Then he started looking around the room like an anxious person. He circled the office desk and table, stopped at the window, and then approached the couch again.
All the while, the man in question never left his vision.
Heerak flipped through the thin stack of papers on the desk once more. They were documents that Seokchan shoved in his arms, saying that it would be good if he skimmed through them before going into the office.
His birthdate and other miscellaneous information did not enter his line of vision.
That word filled Heerak’s mind.
The moment he stepped foot into the office, Heerak was hit with a bad feeling. He could not feel any pheromones whatsoever from that man. Some omegas and alphas sprayed pheromone deodorizers regularly at work so he thought that this person could be one of those people. However, his premonition came true—unless these documents were lies.
“Let me ask you a few questions.”
Heerak finally said and sat across the man. The man lifted his head slightly and responded.
“So, you were a beta.”
The man himself confirmed it. Now this became a truth that he could not deny anymore.
Heerak wracked his brain. He didn’t need to jump to conclusions just yet.
“Then on Saturday night, uh…”
What was his name again?
As if he read his thoughts, the man replied to Heerak quietly.
“My name is Doseon Yoon.”
“Right. Mr. Yoon. Were you the one who helped me in my car?”
“And you also got in the car with me?”
“And then? Where did you get off?”
The instantaneous answers stopped. Instead, Doseon looked at Heerak as if to ask why he was asking those questions. Heerak did not say anything to that gaze.
After a moment of silence, Doseon opened his mouth.
“I got off at the same place as you, Director.”
“Where did we get off?”
A possibility swirled around Heerak’s mind.
‘Right, we could have gotten in the same car. In my drunken state, I could have generously offered a ride to my employee, who was worried and just getting off work. Thus, the person I slept with could have been a different person than the one I got in the car with.’
From the moment he saw the fuzzy image of the man on the surveillance footage, he was certain that that person was the omega he spent the night with. Now, he desperately wanted this certainty to just be in his imagination.
Unfortunately, Doseon answered firmly.
“It was a motel.”
There was no escape now. He had to concede to facts before him. Heerak Cho slept with a beta. He slept with a beta in his drunken stupor. He had to accept this as reality.
Heerak rubbed his face with his hands and mumbled.
“Be more specific… Oh, I’ll apologize in advance, but I really can’t remember anything. So, could you tell me a bit more about what happened that night?”
Doseon nodded and answered.
“Where should I start?”
“Start from when you found me.”
“I found you on my way off work. You were sleeping on a bench, so I got worried. I was worried because I knew that you were our executive director. I asked if you were all right and if I should call my Manager. Then you suddenly grabbed my wrist.”
“You stared at my face for a while and then asked, ‘Do you wanna do it with me?’ So I responded with, ‘What do you mean by that,’ and you replied, ‘What else but s*x?’ I couldn’t believe what I was hearing so I asked, ‘Are you serious?’ Then you smiled and said, ‘I can’t be more serious than I am now.’”
Heerak wanted to sit and listen but he could not take it any longer.
Heerak blurted out without thinking.
Panic flashed by Doseon’s stoic face. Heerak waved his hand and pressed around his eye with his other hand.
“Oh, sorry. I wasn’t saying it to you. I was talking to myself. Please continue.”
“Okay. Then, the car came and I got on with you. I asked you where you wanted to be dropped off and you said, ‘wherever I can sleep with you as soon as possible,’ and immediately fell asleep. I wasn’t able to ask your preferences, so I asked the driver to take us to the closest accommodations.”
Heerak looked like he was about to bury his head into the ground, but at that moment he jolted back up. He was sure that everything that Doseon said was true. There was nothing to doubt about it. The man in front of him did not seem like such an eloquent smooth-talker, and the things Heerak supposedly said sounded plausible.
He had a very bad feeling about this.
Heerak was quick to figure out why he felt so uneasy.
“Doseon Yoon. Let’s make one thing clear.
“I asked you if this was rape when I was doing it with you, right?”
Doseon nodded to show that he was listening and answered.
“How did you answer that question?”
“I said that it wasn’t.”
“Right? You said that it wasn’t rape. But I noticed something was weird while I was listening to you. You said you knew that I was the executive director.”
“Then, did you consent because you couldn’t refuse your superior’s request? I’m really worried about…”
Before Heerak could finish his question, Doseon answered resolutely.
“That was not the case at all.”
“Is that so? Then why did you come into the motel with me?”
Doseon made a mixed face. Doseon looked like he did not understand Heerak’s question, which made Heerak a bit anxious. He felt like he asked something he should not have, even though he knew that this was a question that could be answered fairly easily.
At the serious face of the other, Heerak answered “Yes?” and met eyes with the man. Then, he heard a truly unexpected question.
“Is there anyone in this world who could truly refuse your advances?”
Heerak’s eyes widened.
“Aha, ahaha! What the heck is that? Is that a compliment? Wow, I’m embarrassed.”
No reaction came back.
Whether or not the person in front of him blabbed away while laughing, Doseon sat steadfastly with a blank expression. “Ahem,” Heerak awkwardly cleared his throat.
There was another moment of silence.
Heerak stared at the motionless man who sat opposite him. He too would have described the man across from him as an “average guy.” If the other man were an omega, Heerak would have been able to describe the smell of his pheromones at least, but that was impossible to do for a beta.
He knew it was rude, but he could not help looking the man up and down. And the more he observed him, he realized again and again that he was really drunk that night. It would have been nice if he could give an excuse, that this was a face that he would have wanted to f*ck, beta or not.
He was the epitome of average.
He had a very average face.
“I… I really did have s*x with you then.”
He muttered to himself, feeling empty.
Even though the moment it came out of his mouth, the other person could hear it.
There were many inferences embedded in what he said. With a beta. With such an average joe like you. How come? All his regret and restlessness were mixed in with that single utterance.
He did not know how the other man interpreted that utterance. However, it was easy to tell that Heerak’s mood was down just from the depressed tone of his voice.
“Yes, because you drank too much.”
All emotions left Heerak’s face. His usually bright face became much like that of the expressionless man sitting in front of him. He could not comprehend what he had just heard. Also, he was not sure if this was his misinterpretation, but Doseon sounded like he was trying to comfort Heerak. That made him feel more conflicted.
Now that he thought about it, even if he were talking in a rude tone, the other man was saying some absurd things. He could not get a grasp on Doseon’s intentions. Heerak asked dryly.
“What do you mean? Are you saying that I wouldn’t give a second glance at you if I weren’t so drunk?”
It was an irrefutable truth.
If he were not so intoxicated, there was no way he would have slept with a beta.
Even so, this current situation was very bizarre.
Putting Heerak’s questioning aside, the man who was consistently answering them without any sign of awkwardness was strange. He was not showing any signs of self-hate or upset. He looked like someone who was only being honest. There was no hesitation or sorrow.
“Executive Director, I should apologize to you.”
Doseon blurted out, catching Heerak off guard. Heerak’s eyes narrowed more than before. He kept being hit with an indescribable feeling.
“To me? Why?”
“It all happened so fast that I had no time to stop and think about it. But when I went back home, I thought that I should have refused you for your sake, and I regretted my decision. You were inebriated but ultimately you slept with someone like me. Nobody would feel good about that.”
What was with this guy?
Thoughts that Heerak couldn’t say out loud swam about in his head. He thought that at this point, he could probably call it a psychological attack.
“I have a question for you too, Executive Director.”
Heerak answered, pressing on his temples.
“Yes, go ahead.”
“Why did you look for me?”
“Oh… I didn’t think that I would sleep with a beta, and before I met you, I strongly believed that you were an omega. But I didn’t use contraceptives that night, you know? I didn’t have the chance to either. So…”
Doseon nodded as if he understood.
“I see. Then I really did something inexcusable to you.”
‘Is this where I should also apologize? Sorry for screwing you?’
Heerak pondered for a moment but drew a blank. Right now, his head felt like it was splitting, even more so than when he was hungover.
