My Little Girl (19)
Shun Nuan didn’t know whether her resistance last night had angered Sheng Qianmo.
She called out to him several times in the carriage but got no response. Her only hope in this kingdom was Sheng Qianmo, the last straw she was clinging to. She didn’t know what she had done to anger him so much that he was ignoring her like this.
Shu Nuan felt that she had done something wrong and knelt in front of him. A sadness clouded her features, and she pleaded, “Lord, please don’t ignore Shu Nuan.”
Sheng Qianmo studied her for a moment and then opened his mouth.
“Did This Prince scare you last night?”
Shu Nuan was at a loss of words. Her face showed her hesitation, despite of which she nodded, and said, “Your slave was disappointed…”
Sheng Qianmo declared with an even tone, “You’re lying.”
Shu Nuan lowered her head and said nothing.
After a while, Sheng Qianmo heard the little girl’s tiny sobs…
Sheng Qianmo wrinkled his brows, just about to say something to her. But suddenly, Shu Nuan put her face between his knees and gripped his clothes. Her voice was stained with grievance.
“Your humble slave won’t dare to disobey you in the future, Prince…”
She could come up with no other reason for his fury than what had happened last light. Sheng Qianmo tightened his jaw and held out out his hand to lift the little girl’s face. He gazed at Shu Nuan’s reddened eyes and the tear-mole that was now wet. Apparently, she had been secretly weeping with her face to his legs. Sheng Qianmo reached out his hand to wipe off her tears, and whispered, “This Prince is not angry. Last night’s incident was my fault. Get up.”
How could he tell the frightened little girl that he had went to the military camp early to avoid her, only because he did not know to face her. The previous night he had been that drunk for the first time and ended up doing such an absurd thing to the little slave. She was but a little girl. He was afraid that this has caused Shu Nuan to become extremely scared.
But unexpectedly, Shu Nuan was not angry at him even though it was a significant issue. From her perspective it made sense; Sheng Qianmo was her saving grace.
Sheng Qianmo felt that he could not handle this little girl. He picked her up easily and placed her on his lap.
“How are things at school?”
Shu Nuan’s nose was still red. But with Sheng Qianmo placing her in his lap like this, she blushed a little and sniffled with her dainty little nose, and said, “They’re great! Master Gao is a humble person, and the students are also friendly.”
Sheng Qianmo could see that Shu Nuan was getting along well with the other students, and this placed him at ease.
After returning to his courtyard, and after dinner, Sheng Qianmo went to the library to deal with government affairs. Shu Nuan stayed alone in the bedroom working on Sheng Gu’s clothes, which were almost finished, as she waited for Sheng Qianmo to come back.
Perhaps from staring at the needle and the thread for a long time, but Shu Nuan felt her eyelids grow heavier over time. She didn’t even realise when she fell asleep on the side of the couch…
Upon Sheng Qianmo’s return from the library, he saw Shu Nuan still holding onto the clothes and the needle, but her face lay on the table as she slept.
The faint lamp was glowing with warmth, and its color reflected in her quiet face added a softness to it.
Sheng Qianmo stood and looked at her for a while. He then walked over and glanced down at the needle and clothes clutched between her fingers. He stretched out his hand and put them aside in a gentle manner, then lifted her petite frame from the couch.
