Chapter 14 - First Date
Classes had just finished, and the school gate was filled with people and cars. Gu Jin strolled past, attracting the gazes of those around her. The capital’s university had many female students and plenty of goddesses. And within these contending beauties, Gu Jin confidently faced the crowd without any makeup. Her beauty was like a refreshing breeze within this summer of scorching heat, not losing a bit to others.
A few men eyed her, wanting to strike up a conversation.
But as soon as they lifted their feet, their plan was dead. Gu Jin walked through the school gate without pausing. She went straight toward a junction.
Meanwhile, a chic-suited man of medium height came down from a luxurious car and stood in front of Gu Jin with respect. After a few words had been exchanged, her face paled for an instant. But she immediately recovered and followed the man to the car.
The car window slowly went down, revealing Mu Mingcheng’s handsome face. He had not worn his glasses today, so his unobstructed fierce gaze bore upon Gu Jin’s face. The chilling gaze was prickly and cold. It made his gentle and loving demeanor from the previous day seem like an illusion. Gu Jin felt a bit nervous. But as someone who had read the novel, she recognized this side of him as the real Mu Mingcheng.
To outsiders, Mu Mingcheng was gentle, elegant, and courteous. But all that was simply a cover for his coldness.
She could immediately see that he wasn’t in a good mood. Although she knew the exact reason as to why, she still spoke in a surprised tone, “Mr. Mu, why did you come to the university again? Did the head of the school re-invite you?”
Mu Mingcheng looked at her coldly and raised his lips in a mocking smile. “Didn’t I tell you to wait at the school gate so that I could pick you up? Where did you think you were going?”
“Ah?” Gu Jin’s eyes widened as she continued to act stupid. “When did you say that? I didn’t know, ah!”
Seeing his boss stay silent with pursed lips, Secretary Fang sighed. He said, “Boss, you had sent the message just a while ago.”
Gu Jin turned and looked at him as she innocently blinked. “I’m terribly sorry! My phone ran out of battery while I was in class, so I didn’t see your message.”
Lies! Continue your act! Mu Mingcheng squinted his red phoenix eyes at her in a dangerous manner. He felt he might have underestimated this woman’s fearlessness and shamelessness.
Gu Jin continued to stand outside and smiled without a worry. Her expression displayed complete sincerity. The man inside the car and the woman outside both displayed smiles as wonderful as a fresh breeze of spring. Secretary Fang couldn’t help but shiver.
After a while, the sun had vanished and the ground continued to emit the leftover heat from the daylight. Yet, Gu Jin’s forehead didn’t have a speck of sweat.
The car door opened, letting cool air escape outward. Gu Jin didn’t wait for Mu Mingcheng’s permission and immediately closed her umbrella before stepping into the car. She made it seem as if she had subconsciously placed the umbrella right between the two of them.
After she took her seat, an arm wrapped around her waist. Mu Mingcheng easily suppressed her struggle and gently said, “Baby, I won’t argue with you this time. But remember, there won’t be a next time.”
She smelled the man’s quiet breath again, and her heart couldn’t help but slightly tremble. Although she had clearly heard the implied warning, she acted calmly as if she didn’t understand.
Gu Jin also could count on something. People like Mu Mingcheng could get their hands on any beauties. She was shackled for three months because of a bracelet. But whatever the reason, Gu Jin was certain Mu Mingcheng wouldn’t easily turn against her. Since it had come to this, she just had to occasionally act submissive so that it wouldn’t be a problem.
Gu Jin silently nuzzled her face against his tight chest. This wasn’t a bad tradeoff for such luxury, was it?
“What would you like to eat tonight?” Mu Mingcheng asked with a vague smile.
“Anything. I’m not a picky eater.”
Mu Mingcheng looked at her with a spurious smile and remained silent as the car stopped. Gu Jin’s forehead twitched at seeing the words “Yuqing Pavilion” on the gate. This could be said to be their first date, but the location didn’t leave a good impression on her.
Mu Mingcheng wore his glasses and exited the car. A smart-looking man quickly came up to welcome him.
“Brother Mu, why didn’t you inform us earlier that you were coming?”
Gu Jin and Mu Mingcheng went to a private room where a baby-faced teenager knocked on the door and came in. He was Mu Mingcheng’s acquaintance, and he had come after recognizing his voice.
“This is?” The baby-faced Fang Yuan displayed a slight smile and swiftly scanned Gu Jin, being careful yet courteous.
“My girlfriend, surnamed Gu,” Mu Mingcheng introduced her.
Gu Jin looked at him with a startled expression. Their relationship…being this formal! That couldn’t be good, right?
“So sorry, sister-in-law,” Fang Yuan apologized.
Gu Jin gave a slight nod. She felt like a small animal being protected by Mu Mingcheng.
Fang Yuan couldn‘t help but look at the woman once again. Her face seemed a bit familiar. Isn’t this the girl who had come out of Mu Mingcheng’s room? How did Mu Mingcheng and her end up in a relationship? He had some suspicions, but he had a more urgent matter that needed to be attended to.
“Brother Mu, about that other matter. I was not in the restaurant that day, and the security did not do their job. I’ve already fired them. This boss is benevolent, so please do not worry about this matter.”
Fang Yuan was the hidden boss of Yuqing Pavilion. His family wielded authority and power in the capital. As the youngest descendant, he did not need to work for the family. He had opened this restaurant not to earn money, but out of sheer boredom and the desire to play. Surprisingly, it had attracted a lot of customers. Because of that, his mischievous dealings had gone unpunished.
Karma still struck back. Fang Yuan’s men didn’t do their jobs well, which resulted in Mu Mingcheng’s dilemma. Although the aphrodisiac and the women weren’t their faults, they were responsible for this restaurant. The incident had happened under their watch.
Rumors had it that under that courteous mask, Mu Mingcheng was a cold-hearted man. Fang Yuan had become worried when the other party had not contacted him for a few days. He even considered whether he should close his restaurant sooner. But business had been in operation for a few years, and he was reluctant to give it up. The property value was high. However, could he afford to offend the wrong guy? He could only obey in front of the head of Mu Mingcheng’s maternal family.
But based on the situation right now, there was still hope.
Mu Mingcheng had won a beautiful lady.
Sure enough, Mu Mingcheng gently smiled. “This matter does not concern the restaurant. Those who dared to mess with me have been dealt with.”
Mu Mingcheng had said the words “dealt with” very casually, but Fang Yuan’s heart chilled. Since ancient times, the most successful people were well-mannered and talkative. But if one were to simply regard them as gentlemen, one would end up dead.
After exchanging a few more words, Fang Yuan carefully excused himself.
Gu Jin was listening the whole time, and she got a general idea of the situation. It appeared that her accidental entanglement with Mu Mingcheng had such a reason behind it.
Their food finally arrived.
Gu Jin had a bad impression of this restaurant, but she was quite satisfied with the dishes. However, her satisfaction turned into anger once she saw the green cilantro.
“What is the meaning of this, Mr. Mu?” She glared at the table and raised her chin.
“Please eat your food.” Mu Mingcheng used the serving chopsticks to pick up the vegetables topped with the cilantro. He put them in front of Gu Jin, staring at her face with a smile.
This was revenge, pure and simple revenge since she tried to slip away from him after her class. Gu Jin looked at the chopsticks extended in front of her with disgust and wanted to throw them.
But she suddenly eyed the carrots and the celery. She picked both of them up and said with a smile, “Let me return the favor, Mr. Mu. Don’t be shy.”
Seeing the man’s face stiffen up, Gu Jin vaguely smiled as if to say “Let’s hurt each other!” At least her serious efforts into reading that novel had not gone to waste. She had remembered his dislikes.
The dishes were quickly withdrawn and replaced with new ones. This time, Gu Jin cheerfully ate. If it hadn’t been for her recently ended period, which forbade her to eat spicy food, the meal would have been perfect. Seeing his girlfriend happily eat her meal, Mu Mingcheng smiled deeply.
Even among the people closest to him, only a few knew about his pickiness in food. However, this woman knew about it. He had met her just the previous day. She had never even heard his name before, and yet she was able to discover his preferences.
He admitted that Gu Jin was smart. Still, being smart did not mean she should know his weakness. He did not know where she had dug up this information.
